Subject: PASSION FILM

Hi
I'm a gentile Christian from the UK and would like to disagree with some of your comments about the Passion film.
You felt it makes "all" the Jews look bad but not all the gentiles. I don't think this is true - John looks very good. So does Mary, Mary Magdalene, Simon of Cyrene (shown as being Jewish or part-Jewish in the film) Many of the common folk, the women along the street, "Veronica" etc etc. Also, its the first time I've seen Caiphus treated in a fairly sympathetic light - he starts off arrogant, but unlike the Romans, he is shown as starting to be touched by Jesus pain during the scourging, and finally being so affected by Him that he is shown as repenting - I doubt if that was true in history from what I've heard. St John (Jewish) says that Pilate did in fact try to let Jesus off -(was that because of his wife?) None of the Jews behave in the dreadful way that some of the Romans do - actually enjoying cruelty and laughing with pleasure at Jesus pain! I think it is very true and fair to the gospel accounts. Two of the Sanhedrin are shown as defending Jesus - Joseph of Aramathea and Nicodemas - I don't know if you noticed the look of amazement on Jesus face when Nicodemas speaks out on His behalf?
When you are talking about "Jews" I can't help thinking you are using the term in a similar way that John used it - meaning the religeous officialdom from Judea. It is not the first time in Jewish history that the leaders of Israel have been corrupt and led the people astray - just as leaders all over the world do - including Christian leaders, who are the one's with most reponsibility for "re-crucifying Jesus in His people all down the centuries. During Jesus ministry He seemed to get on better with much more ordinary people - ordinary Israelis - especially in the North. Having been to Israel now, I can see some similarity in that situation today. Jesus loves the secular "Tel Aviv" people just as much as the orthodox in Jerusalem, and the secular ones seem to have much more feeling towards Jesus.
There is something I would like to understand more - I have some knowledge of the terrible things we Christians have done to the Jews over the last 2000 years. To me personally, I feel no end of grief (I cannot emphasise that too much) because whereas to me, the Cross of Jesus is the most wonderful marvelous expression of His personal love for me - I knew no love at all in the first part of my life, and then there was Jesus coming to me with His infinite but personal passionate love for me! And then, I found that to a Jew, the Cross means the opposite of love - it's like satan has tried to turn love into hate. So what I would like some comments on is: how can you tell a Jew that Jesus loves them so much He died for him? That He loves Jews so much He will never let them go, and had to go down to death with them because He could not bear to be parted from them? That the Jews are Jesus' first love? I mean I can tell a gentile who is in trouble that Jesus loves them, but doesn't it simply cause more pain to a Jew? What is the answer to this please?

Vivian
