Hi Rabbi
I am quite amused at the thought of a Rabbi playing both Jesus and satan! I must say that I would not have like to have played satan in the Passion film! Although I don't agree with your reluctance to show Yeshua in plays and films, I can understand why you may object. But Yeshua is after all the Son of Man as well as the Divine Word. And He became a "creature" for the purpose of salvation, and He also said that anyone who blasphemes against the Son of Man will be forgiven - to look at the extreme end of the argument. I don't think I would feel comfortable playing Jesus myself actually, but don't think it wrong. In my opinion the Passion film is an act of G-d. I have been praying for years that our Heavenly Father would give a revelation of the Cross, first to His own people, and then to the whole world. I feel that the film was a partial answer. I saw the film 5 times, and my Jewish/Christian friend saw it 4 times! I am simply amazed at the uncompromising way the film told the Gospel - no trying to make it rational, or leave out unacceptable bits, but presenting the Cross actually the way Yeshua Himself spoke about His own death. He twice described His death in terms of Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness, that He might draw all men to Him. This is not the way any of us would want to talk about it! Some of the symbolism in the film was marvelous, and there was so much of it. For example, when Yeshua had put down the Cross, and He was standing, staggering, and His long white garment was stained red - and suddenly I saw! The red heifer! And then I realised that the bible describes how the red heifer was led out of the city, and not killed by, but rather in front of, the High Priest! That is exactly what happened. And there was all this meaning coming out all through the film. I also thought it was wonderful how Yeshua was shown as being crushed, yet rising and rallying with such a kingly bearing. I don't think anyone else could have played Him as well as Jim Cav[can't remember his name!] did. If he was struck by lightening, I think satan did not like what he was doing, and G-d protected him. The thing is, that so many of us do not really go into the depths of the Cross, and study the meaning. We think we know it all. It is obviously impossible to know the actuality of it all, but our Heavenly Father seems so willing to teach and reveal to anyone who asks about it. I am still finding myself amazed, when I discover yet another symbol in the Old Testament that I never saw, and it almost seems that our Heavenly Father is obsessed with the wonderful and heroic act of His Beloved. He speaks of it in so many different ways. It is very important for us, especially as we move toward the last days, that we understand that the victory was not won on Easter Day, but on Good Friday, because we are going to need that information - we will need to know that in Him, we have the victory even while the darkness is enclosing us, rather than thinking, "we will have the victory when we reach better territory". Anyway, I think Mel Gibson was given a task by G-d, because the Churches are not doing it. It is not going to be perfect. It is not an evangelistic sermon, it is a work of art, which nevertheless speaks so much truth, so clearly. My favourite part is Mary Magdalene, when she realises that the reason He was able to release her from her accusers, is because He was punished in her place, as she is looking at the Blood on the floor after the scourging. And the way she remembers Jesus reaching down and she finds herself being raised up. Wonderful! That is MY Yeshua alright!
Blessings
Vivian
