PART #46
Catherine noticed she was again feeling nauseated while riding out to the plantation. The heat was oppressive to her, and she felt faint. She asked Bow if they could stop for a while so she could catch her breath. They stopped the carriage, and he helped her down to walk for a bit. He became concerned about her appearance. He had never seen her like this. Something must be wrong; this was not Catherine.
After a while, she said, “Bow, I think I can make it now. Let’s continue our trip to the plantation.” When they reached their destination, Bow drove the carriage to the front door of the main house. He helped Catherine down, and into the house. Manobo came to meet them, and Bow said, “I want you to prepare a pot of tea for Miss Catherine, and take it to her room.” Catherine still was feeling faint, so Bow helped her to the bedroom, and over to the bed. He tried to loosen her shoes, and remove them. She said, “Please have Manobo bring a basin to me. I am afraid I am going to be sick again.” Bow rushed out of the room calling for Manobo. Soon he was back with the basin; and as Catherine tried to sit up, she fainted and fell back on the bed.
Bow was terrified concerning Catherine. He didn’t know what was wrong with her, but he was upset with himself for not insisting upon taking her to see the doctor in Lake Charles. He called out to Manobo who came running into the room. He said, “Manobo, we must get a doctor out here from Lake Charles to attend to Catherine. Take the carriage, drive into town, and go to Dr. Lasserre’s home. Tell him he is needed at the LeBleu plantation. Please hurry.
Manobo raced outside to the carriage, and took off down the road toward Lake Charles. He didn’t know what was wrong with Miss Catherine, but he knew she needed Dr. Lasserre as soon as possible. He was so intent on getting to Lake Charles as fast as the carriage could get him there that he failed to see three riders along the side of the road. There were two men and one woman resting their horses in the shade of a large cypress tree. One of the men said, “Isn’t that the butler from the LeBleu plantation? I wonder where he is going in such a hurry.” The woman, seeming to be in a hurry, said, “Let’s get moving, we have to make sure Joshua has moved the goods before another load is brought to the storehouse.” They got back on their horses, and rode in the direction of the LeBleu plantation.
After a few minutes, Catherine regained consciousness, and saw Bow standing over her with a look of sheer terror in his eyes. She tried to sit up, and asked, “Bow, has something happened? You look terrified.” Bow said, “Catherine, you fainted. I was afraid something had happened to you; are you feeling better now?” She replied, “I can’t believe that happened to me. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.”
Bow said, “Catherine, I sent Manobo to Lake Chares to fetch Dr. Lasserre. I am worried about you.” She tried to stand up, and he said, “Catherine, you stay in that bed until Dr. Lasserre can take a look at you. I don’t want to see you falling down in a dead faint again.” She could see a determined look on his face, and knew it would be pointless to argue with him on the matter.
Bow had opened the window for some fresh air for Catherine. Through the open window, he could hear horses approaching. He looked out the window, and saw two men and one woman riding toward the main house. He quickly turned toward the bed; and in a curt voice said, “Catherine, I don’t want you to get out of bed or this room for any reason. Am I understood?” She was startled by the tone in his voice, and knew something was wrong. She tried to ask him about the problem; but he was running out of the room, and she could hear the clicking of his boots as he ran down the stairs.
Catherine dragged herself over to the window, and saw the three riders approaching. As soon as she saw them, she knew why Bow was upset. He had told her to stay in the room, but she thought she must find a gun. Bow might need her help. She wasn’t going to sit up here like a helpless female, and allow something to happen to Bow.
She could hear Bow calling for the two deputies; and heard them respond from somewhere in the house. She heard Bow tell them he felt the riders coming toward the house were the Doucettes and Jean Pierre Boudreau.
To be continued...
