PART #47

Bow had made up his mind he was not giving out any information about Joshua. He wanted these people to leave, and ride out to the swamp to check on their stolen property. He must say something that would cause them to think that Joshua was in the process of moving the stolen goods. When they came up to the door, Bow opened the door; and he could tell they were surprised. The woman asked for Joshua; and Bow said, “Hello, Joshua is not here right now. He said he had to make some deliveries today. I don’t expect him back before tomorrow.” The woman asked, “And who might you be?” He said, “I’m Joshua’s cousin, Bow.” She smiled and said, “Oh, yes, I have heard about you.” Bow said, “Yes, I can well imagine you have heard of me; most people manage to hear about me in these parts.”

The woman looked at Bow once again; and asked, “Did Joshua mention where he was going?” Bow answered, “No, he just said he had some deliveries to make, and he would be gone overnight. Did you want me to give him a message when he returns?” She stepped back and said, “No that will not be necessary; I will see him in a day or so.” She walked down the steps; and got back on her horse, and motioned for the two men to leave. As they rode away, the two deputies stepped out from behind the wall, and there was a loud clatter upstairs.

Bow raced up the stairs, and found Catherine had gotten out of bed and was grasping a heavy silver candleholder. She had fainted again, and the candleholder had fallen to the floor. He picked her up, and carried her back to the bed. She was white as the sheets on the bed. He was angry with her for trying to get out of bed. He believed he had never seen such a strong willed woman in all his life.

Catherine began to moan as she was regaining consciousness. She saw Bow down on his knees beside the bed. “Bow, are they gone?” she asked. “Yes, Catherine, they are gone; what were you doing out of bed?” She said, “I was trying to find a gun, but I couldn’t find one anywhere; so I picked up the silver candleholder. I decided I could at least throw it at one of them.”

Bow shook his head and said, “Catherine, how much good do you think a silver candleholder would be against three people with guns? Do you even know how to shoot a gun, if you could have found one?” She looked at him, and answered, “Yes, I know how to shoot a gun. My father taught me how to handle a gun so I could hunt game with him.”

Bow said, “You are a bundle of surprises Catherine.” They heard a knock on the door; and one of the deputies said, “Bow, we have given them enough time to get ahead of us; I do believe we had better follow them, and see if they went to the swamp. There are other men out there, and we will need to give them some support when they encounter these three.”

Bow said, “You go on ahead. I am waiting here with Catherine since Manobo went into Lake Charles to fetch a doctor for her. He should be back shortly. I want to get her out of here as soon as she is well enough to travel. I will feel much better when she is back in Lake Charles.”

The deputies left, and Bow waited with Catherine. She told him she was feeling better, and would like to get up to sit in a chair. He noticed she did seem to have more color in her cheeks. Maybe the worst was over. The window was open, and the wind was blowing the curtains into the room. Catherine said it felt good to be able to sit where she could feel the breeze. Bow watched her as the breeze blew strands of her hair across her face. She had her head resting against the high back of the chair. Bow wondered about the dreamy look she had in her eyes. Most women would be terrified at the prospect of danger. She had been ready to fight even in her fragile condition.

They could hear the sound of horses, and looked out the window to see that Manobo and Dr. Lasserre were approaching in the carriage. Dr. Lasserre’s horse was tied onto the back of the carriage. Soon Manobo appeared at the bedroom door with Dr. Lasserre. Bow excused himself as Dr. Lasserre came into the room. He said, “Catherine, I will be downstairs. If you need anything all you have to do is call my name.” Bow and Manobo walked out of the room and down the stairs.

To be continued...
