PART #13
Bowregard managed to keep himself scarce during Catherine’s visit by duckinginside the carriage house when her carriage pulled up in front of the main house. He could see no good reason for her having to see him there. He had no desire to encounter her in another of her hysterical outbursts. He had never seen a woman who could get so upset, and yet cause such stirring of his blood as she did. It was obvious this woman could be trouble.
He wondered if he had made a terrible mistake in trying to kiss her. If she had a mind to, she could have him arrested. He wondered if she realized pirates, if convicted, were hung. Would she even care? It was Joshua’s idea to pirate the ship where she just happened to be a passenger. Joshua was the one who had the connections in Europe, and had known about some of the cargo that would be on the ship. He had planned the whole thing. Was it Bowregard’s fault he hadn’t found the silver punch bowl? Who would have guessed the woman bringing the punch bowl to the Americas would be sitting on top of it in the middle of the raid?
Bowregard had to admit that Catherine was a quick thinker even when she was ill. There had been no pretense on her part; it was obvious she was terribly ill. Bowregard had felt sorry for her in her pitiful state. It had never occurred to him she might be sitting on top of the priceless silver bowl. He thought back to the question that Joshua had asked him when he returned to the Plantation after the raid. “Where is the silver punch bowl?” Bowregard had told him they had made the rounds of the ship, and nothing showed up during the raid. Joshua was not happy for he realized he would have to pay for the bowl when it arrived. He stormed about their incompetence. Bowregard said, “Would it not have looked pretty suspicious if we had inquired about the silver punch bowl?” Joshua had finally calmed down, but Bowregard knw that he preferred receiving such items for free. Why spend money on something you could steal?
Bowregard spent some time rubbing down the horses, and putting them away after his carriage ride to the plantation. Could it be that Joshua had arranged the theft of Catherine’s money? He usually did not want to get his hands dirty, and he left that side of the business to Bowregard. But, when it involved this much money, Bowregard could see him hiring someone to follow Catherine, and steal the money.
Joshua would consider this to be a delicate matter, and would not want to ask Bowregard because of his relationship with Catherine.
He laughed as he thought of Catherine calling him a rogue and a scoundrel. Oh, if she only knew about Joshua. On top of all his traits, he could deceive people in a fine tuned way. Bowregard said softly, “You’d better watch out Catherine; you don’t know what or who you are tangling with when you blink those pretty, dancing eyes at Joshua Sallier.”
Bowregard had chided himself for allowing Joshua to talk him into his business ventures. Granted they had both become very rich, and it had helped many people to obtain objects they could not have afforded any other way. Many people were perfectly willing to look the other way when it came to getting what they wanted at a lower price. Joshua had said, “Bow, we are simply meeting a need. People will be grateful to pay us for objects of art they could not obtain on their own because of the expensive price tag.”
That Joshua was a smooth talker, and he had talked Bowregard into becoming a pirate. He told him he had natural skills because of his father’s genes. When Bowregard had to round up men who were willing to participate in these acts of piracy, he was the one who had to deal with criminal sorts, not Joshua. Joshua had always managed to keep his own hands clean. When these pirates got carried away; and killed innocent people, where was Joshua? He was at home walking around the plantation in his shiny black boots playing the gentleman of the manor.
That afternoon Bowregard had decided he was going to distance himself from his cousin as much as possible. If Joshua wanted to continue with his shady business deals, let him work it out on his own. No longer was Bowregard going to be pulled into his business transactions.
To be continued...
