Hope is doing OK. It is true that it wasn't a sparkling performance against Iceland but to be fair, many of the girls are still amateur and are not used to the big match atmosphere. The Iceland team were a big awkward bunch and were going to pose some problems, especially if our girls were to over commit early on.

My criticsism of the England scene is that we are a little one dimensional and do not play with much flair or artistry. It is all battle and percentage balls. With an onus on making less mistakes than the other team. This is all well and good in the short term but it will not endear the women's game to the public at large and this surely has to be the ultimate goal. Get more people watching the women's game and we will have a pro league and television money in no time. Play the game like semi-pro men and it will turn off everyone including all the fantastic talent that is coming through the ranks now.

The game needs to be beautiful and artistic as well as physical and athletic!

I know the original post was about Hope Powell but actually perhaps the critiscism should be laid at the door of some of her own male coaching staff who hail from non-league/lower league up and under style backgrounds.
