Date Posted: 03:55:47 05/01/03 Thu It seems that the comraderie and spirit emanating from the Butchers camp of late has become somewhat infectious. Earlier this week 2 new players, Matt Roodenrys and Stephen Trivett, approached officials about having a run with the club. Both men are well known to local league fans, with Roodenrys having 3 stellar seasons with the blue and whites from 1999 - 2001. Trivett rose to cult-hero status when he lead the now defunct Austinmer Breakers to the CUB Cup grand final in 1999 where they were narrowly defeated by Avondale. The much maligned Roodenrys has peppered Butchers head coach Brett Jones with a barrage of phonecalls this week, begging for a second chance after ditching the club in the pre season. This isn't the first time that "Puffy" has harrassed a coach. Roodenrys' phonecall to former Thirroul mentor Phil Ostwald in season 2000 remains etched in Gibson Park folklore. A boozy Roodenrys, unhappy with a prolonged stint in reserve grade, woke the Ostwald household at 3am one Sunday morning only to slur the words, "I am a first grader..... I am a first grader!" Meanwhile it has been nearly 4 years since Trivett, a ball-playing front rower, laced on the boots and he has embarked on a full scale training campaign in a bid to regain his fitness. Since his early retirement from the game at the age of 24, he has set about quenching his eternal thirst for red wine and as a result his fitness has dropped alarmingly. Trivett is leaving for Paris this week, which will be his training base for the next 3 weeks, he spent 4 weeks cycling through France as a youngster back in 1995 and he is keen to renew acquaintances with the torturous mountains of the Pyrenees. Coach Jones has indicated that the enigmatic pair will be welcomed to the club but was guarded when asked about their chances. "Roota has talked the talk, now I want to see him walk the walk! I hope it works out because they would be real assets to the club. We're just going to take it week by week at this stage." Jones has also expressed concerns about Trivetts training program, fearing that the abundance of Vineyards could bring the big fella undone.
