"The Education of Hyman Kaplan" by Leonard Q. Ross.
Maybe you could get it used on Amazon or a used bookstore?

It was originally published in the 1930's in the New Yorker. It uses language a bit archaically, but that adds to it's charm. I was laughing out loud, and Joe was saying, "What is so funny??!!" Very witty, clever, amusing, tender, you get the idea. It is a very quick, light read. Perfect for times when you want something to read, but you know you'll be interrupted a lot (like riding on the subway, waiting in the doctor's office, etc.), or you just need something witty and humorous and clever to read--that will also make you feel smart.

Here is the synopsis on the back cover:
"Hyman Kaplan, the irrepressible student at the American Night Prepatory School for Adults, has capitvated readers ever since he appeared in the pages of the New Yorker.

Few immigrants have prepared themselves for the responsibility of citizenship with such high spirits as Kaplan, unrestrained by the pedantic guidence of Mr. Parkhill, who suffers as his student plays havoc with the English language. His original treatment of speech recitation and composition convulses his classmates and sorely tempts his teacher to promote him prematurely, but it is a foregone conclusion that a mind as inventive and indomitable as Kaplan's will win out in the end."
