To the producers, executives, and actors of the upcomming new HBO show "Big Love":
Please read this.
Taking a very potentially funny topic like placing one man with three wives seems on the surface like a great set up for hilarious episodes and complications that arise in marriages--times three. I can see the initial appeal.
What concerns me most about this show, Big Love, is the making light, the making a sitcom out of a very serious social ill of polygamy. Imagine this: a sitcom about a 40+ year old man who convinces a 14 year old girl to run away from home and be his "wife". He then keeps her at home all day, getting her pregnant, having many children, not allowing her to pursue an education or even leave the home. When she is in her mid-twenties, he trusts her a bit more and she is allowed to leave the home occasionally to run errands. This is closer to the truth of polygamous marriages.
There is obviously nothing funny about the illustration above. But, you could make it funny. We could laugh at the quirks of living with men, living with women, sitting down on a toilet whose seat was left up (ha ha ha), taking care of an emotional pregnant wife who cries because her casserol didn't turn out (ha ha ha).
Teenage girls are betrothed to older men, and taken from home at an early age so that by the time they are more mature, they don't see an alternative to their enslavement. It is tragic. Very few women have be able to escape polygamous marriages. Thier tales are harrowing, and you insult their ordeals by making this show, Big Love, about the hilariaty of polygamy.
It's not funny to those oppressed women who live in polygamous relationships, and your show, BIG LOVE, will only serve to make it seem like a possible reality that isn't that bad--that is even a decent alternative lifestyle for some people.
You need to take a harder look at the values (or lack of values) you are emitting to our society with this show. I am asking you as a concerned citizen of our community in America to please NOT AIR THIS SHOW.
