Sara,
My prayers are with your mom. I hope things go well.

I just wanted to tell you guys about a different form of birth control that I'm using--because I think it's great. It's an IUD (intra-uterine device) and it's typically recommended for women who have already had a baby but because of my past health problems doctors said this would be the best thing for me. Now, you've probably heard scary things about IUDs because in the 1970s a lot of women used them and had problems. But there's a new kind on the market that's been used in Europe for the past 12 years and was approved by the FDA a couple years ago for the US. It's called Mirena IUD and is completely safe. Here's how it works: you go into your GYN who inserts it into your uterus. The insertion is kind of painful, but not as much if you've had children because then everything is more stretched out. The Mirena is really small, maybe an inch long and an inch wide, and it sits in your uterus and emits the same hormones that are in the pill, just localized in your uterus. Once the Mirena is inserted it begins to work immediately thinning the lining of the uterus and preventing sperm movement. It has proven to be more effective than the pill preventing pregnancies AND you don't have to worry about it--ever. It can stay there for up to five years if you want. And whenever you decide you want to get pregnant, you just go to your GYN, have it removed, and you can become pregnant immediately. Another great benefit is that it lightens your period. I highly recommend it for any of you new mothers who are looking for an easy form of birth control. I've really been happy with it, but because I haven't had kids yet I did have some problems initially. The insertion was kind of painful and I had awful cramping for about 6 weeks--my GYN said my cramps were basically like having contractions because my uterus wasn't used to having something in it!

Anyway, that's probably more than you wanted to know, but just thought I'd share. It's been great for me.

Elisa
