Yes, in this analogy, the swoosh is the packaging. The shoe itself is immaterial, since there are tons of different shoes available (and probably cheaper, too ^^). But people will buy the shoes with the swoosh, just because it has the swoosh.

The idea is that maybe in the future, digital entertainment might run the same way. Someone purchases the dvds/cds/whatever not because of the movie/music itself, but because of what comes with the dvds/cds. Just like how many people will purchase shoes with the swoosh, not because of any inherent qualities of the shoes themselves.

No, in this case the two choices are:
1. download for "free" the anime/music/movies/whatever.
2. purchase the "official" versions of the entertainment.

If people can be convinced that the "official" versions are somehow superior to the pirated versions (like how Nike convinces people that shoes with swooshes are inherently better then shoes without swooshes) then people will purchase the official version over just getting them for free.

How exactly to convince people will be the problem ^^. Although good packaging and stuff is definitely one way to go. It is hard to digitize a stuffed animal/teeshirt/collectors box/limited edition cards/ect that even now companies are including with their releases.
