So what if I start putting Nike swooshes on my shoes and selling them? What if I buy someone's DVD with fancy extras, make copies of it, and sell them at a lower price because I didn't have to pay to produce the extras? The extras are just intellectual property, in fact so is the Nike swoosh, so I should be able to copy them by your philosophy.

I think you and Dave have too many hardcore anime friends. =P Most people I know don't care about collector's editions, merchandise, or stuff like that. If it was a choice between a $35 DVD in a fancy case with cool extras, a keychain, and a poster or a $5 DVD in a simple case, I and most people I know would buy the $5 one. And like you said in another post, it's the general public that counts, not the hardcore fans.
Also I'm a little confused about your saying that people will have to choose between the official and pirated versions. Does that mean you think that companies should still have to pay a licensing fee to release an anime, but that it's ok for other people to pirate it without paying a fee? That seems contradictory. Or are you saying that nobody should have to pay a licensing fee and by "official" you mean "high quality"?
