This may sound kind of mean, but another thing to take into account is that I don't know how many anime companies particularly care about the "hardcore" fans.
If you were in charge of an anime company, would you want the next Lain (a good show, but really only popular among a small group of people) or the next Pokemon? Would you want to sell your dvds at the local comic book store, or WalMart?
Personally, I think that the real money is in the general public, rather then the hardcore fans. So it might be that in the end the hardcore fans who view the pirated anime are completely insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
And in regards to your last point, I don't believe that it is certain that: fansubs = companies losing money. It is a little more complicated then that ... ^^
