Gasaraki wasn't exactly a copy of Evangelion. It had its own thing it wanted to do. Problem was it tried to ape Evangelion AND be its own show, at once, and...just failed utterly. (Despite the apparent paradox of that, it's not impossible; I've learned to never say "XYZ cannot be done", because with enough skill almost anything can be made to work.)
Oddly enough, there are people who adore Gasaraki, and I can even see why; the parts where Gasaraki does its own thing are actually kind of interesting, some of the time. It's just...they tried to mix political drama with, well, an Eva clone...and the two just don't mix; Eva relies on cofusion and concealment, because the camera follows the pilots (pawns), and political drama requires that you see large parts of the picture from the get go. It would be quite difficult to reconcile the two, and Gasaraki just can't.

YUA is one of few Warm-and-fuzzy-for-its-own-sake shows I can stomach.
