I think that it is possible to differentiate Kenshin's speech somewhat. The manner of speech he uses is ultra-polite, somewhat archaic, and indirect. It's sort of the difference between "Hey, how ya doin'?" and "How fare thee today, my lady?" Of course the comparison is not exactly the same, but it gets my point across. If the translator is willing to put some time and effort into making the differentiation, I think it's possible to do.

It's been a long while since I've watched Kenshin, but I believe Sano just speaks very roughly. If I recall correctly Tae and Sae do not speak Kansai, but a different dialect which mostly involved putting their word accents in odd places. The one person I am sure spoke Kansai was Chou. *looks to Dave F and Akito to see if either of them either recall or are willing to look up Sano's and Tae's exact speech patterns*

I thought this was an idiotic way of translating Kenshin, especially as the one thing I thought they were doing it for was the dumb gozaru kid, but I think they actually had the kid say gozaru rather than repeating what Kenshin says, like I thought'd they have the kid do. =/

The way you put this argument, it sounds like you've changed your mind and are arguing for dubs - if the creators don't care, then why should the people making the anime viewable to people from other countries care how close the finished product is to the original vision?
