Short and long term design implications need to be considered:

1.Texture
Movement at each level should be unimpeded and unobstructed. Ideally 1,800mm should be allowed for wheelchairs to pass each other, minimum corridor width should be 1,200mm, but if narrower passages can not be avoided doors into spaces off should have at least 1,000mm doorsets.

Excessive monochromatic colour schemes should be avoided and floor and wall surfaces should be contrasted.

Issues of health and safety, security, and means of escape should all be addressed and co-ordinated. Items such as fire extinguishers should be positioned/recessed to be clearly visable but obstruct or create hazards for visually disabled people.

The floor should be slip-resistant flooring, constrasting in colour from wall surfaces, will be important for maintaining safety and hygiene.

For ease of wheelchair use, floor surfaces should be firm or hard, well fixed, and non-directional.

Sound
Communication spaces should have the capacity for the provision of hearing assistance and should have acoustic environment that minimises sound reverberation and reflection.

Any alarm button in a lift car should be fitted with a visual acknowledgement that the bell has sounded for those life users unable to hear it.

Alarm-linked hold-back devices on fire doors should be used.

Audible alarms can, with benefit, be supplemented by visual alarms where hearing impaired people are likely to be present.

Colour
Signage should be in upper and lower case with contrasting colour/tone.
All internal changes of level, including single steps or ramps should be clearly indicated.
Ensure that all stair nosings are clearly marked in constrast with the treads and risers.
Provide colour indicators at all changes of level where appropriate.
Visibility panels should be provided, related to both standing and seated eye levels.

Smell
Provide different kinds of smell of different area as possible, such as flower and fruit, eg,Apple in reception, orange in libruary.
