Author: Rippers' Girl Disclaimer: I do not own these characters, they are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy & UPN. L I simply am doing this for fun, and non-profit use. Feedback: Please tell me what you think -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Giles gasped when he saw her. She was so small and pale lying in that hospital bed and she was hooked up to so many machines. "What happened to her?" he asked. "We don't know," Willow answered sadly. "Xander found her unconscious and brought her straight to the hospital. The doctors we're waiting for you to get here because Dawn is the only one of us who's actually related to Buffy but she's a minor. Since you're still listed as Dawn's guardian he said he would talk to us when you got here." "Can you go find him then?" Giles asked quietly. "I will," Willow replied. She just looked at him sadly before going to find the doctor. After she had left Giles sat by Buffy' side and took one of her hands. "Buffy, love, what happened to you?" he whispered. "You can't die. I can't bear to lose you again. Please be ok." Then he just sat there and held her hand as if he could will her to be okay. That is how Willow and the doctor found him when they got to the room. "Mr. Giles," the doctor said. "I'm Dr. Stevenson." "Hello, Dr. Stevenson, what happened to Buffy?" "Why don't we get Dawn and I can talk to the two of you together." They started walking back to the waiting room where everyone was waiting for news of Buffy. "Please," Giles said, "all of these people are like family to Buffy whatever you tell Dawn and I will be told to them anyone could you just tell us all at once." Dr. Stevenson looked around at all of these young people who had stayed by their friends side day and night and said, "All right. Why don't we all go to the conference room down the hall?" They followed him into the room and each found a seat to sit in while Dr. Stevenson stood at the head of the table. "Talking about Buffy's physical injuries she appears to have had her back thrown out and some ribs bruised but both of those injuries appear to be healing just fine. There is no physical reason why she should be in a coma." He paused for a minute to look at the group around him wondering how they would react to the news he was about to deliver. "Then why won't she wake up?" Dawn asked tearfully. "It appears," Dr. Stevenson continued, "that she has also suffered a very severe emotional trauma. I hate to have to tell you this but Buffy was raped." Everyone around the table was shocked. Dawn and Willow both burst into tears and Giles looked like he was going to throw up. Xander looked the least shocked but he remembered that when he had found her, her clothes had been shredded. "I think that what happened to her was too much for her to handle and that's why she hasn't woken up yet. She can't face what happened and is hiding inside herself. I'm glad that you all have been sitting with her I believe she can hear you when you talk to her and that maybe if she listens to all of you she will wake up. I know this is a lot for all of you to digest so if you have any questions you can ask me anytime. I'm usually around somewhere." With that he left them there to talk amongst themselves. They all sat around the table not looking at each other, not knowing what to say. Finally Anya spoke up, "How did this happen? She's the slayer she should be able to protect herself." "I think," Giles spoke quietly, "that whatever physical injuries she sustained prevented her from fighting back against her attacker." He paused trying to hold himself together. "We should find out what attacked her in the first place to disable her so. It must be something extremely nasty to do her such harm." Willow looked at the others uneasily before speaking up, "Not necessarily." "Why not?" Giles asked. "Well," she said. "Buffy's been really depressed this week and this wasn't the first close call she's had although this was the worst." "What do you mean?" Giles demanded. "Well," Willow continued. "She hasn't been eating and Tara or I usually have to patch her up after patrol. She's been acting almost like she did when…" Willow stopped realizing that she had almost told Giles what Buffy had been like when he left. Giles gave her a look before saying, "Almost like when?" Xander was the one who decided to answer this time. "Almost like when you left." "What?" Giles asked. "After you left," Xander said, "Buffy was practically a zombie. We were really worried about her." Willow piped up then, "Yeah, but then after you called she's been getting better. She looks forward to your talks every week." "Why didn't I know about this?" Giles demanded. "Well," Willow said sheepishly, "we knew you had left so Buffy would take some responsibility and we got that but we were kind of angry at you for leaving anyway." "Hey," Anya but in, "I wanted to call you but they wouldn't let me. I tired to tell them that…mphg." She was cut off as Xander slapped his hand over her mouth before she could finish her sentence. "It doesn't matter," Xander said hastily. "All that matters is that you're here now and that we get Buffy to wake up." "All right," Giles said. "Does anyone know what brought on this depression all of a sudden? When I talked to her last she seemed okay. She said there had been a lot of vampires Saturday night but that they hadn't been a problem." "Well she was upset Sunday morning," Tara spoke up. "Her eyes were all red like she'd been crying and she looked like she hadn't gotten any sleep." "That's the night the nightmares started again," Dawn put in. "Nightmares?" Giles asked. "Yeah," Dawn replied. "She had them when she first got back but they stopped around the time that you came back from England. They started up again when you left but they stopped like a week later. She hadn't had any again until last Saturday." "Then it must have had something to do with your phone call," Willow said looking at Giles. "That's when it all started. What did you guys say to each other?" "I told you," Giles replied. "We talked about that nights patrol and that's about it." He sat back and tried to think. "Now that you mention it she did end our conversation somewhat abruptly." "Do you know why?" Willow asked. Giles thought some more trying to figure out what had set Buffy off. "Well we were talking and then…that's right I asked her to hold on because Olivia had come in to ask if I was off the phone yet." "Olivia?" Willow asked. "Yes," Giles replied. "Her car had broken down and she had come in to use the phone to call a tow truck. It was then that Buffy ended the call. But I don't see how Olivia could have had anything to do with it." Everyone was quiet for a while trying to figure it out. Impatient with them all Dawn decided to speak up, "Are you all really that dense? Don't you see? If she heard Olivia she probably thought that she and Giles had gotten back together." "But why would that upset Buffy?" Willow asked. Dawn just looked at them all not believing that they couldn't see it. She didn't want to tell them the real truth because that was for Buffy to decide but she figured she could get away with just a partial truth. "Because," Dawn explained exasperated, "If Giles is back together with Olivia then he won't come home." With that she got up and went to check on Buffy. The rest of them just sat there and looked at each other. Willow looked at Giles who was pretty much asleep sitting up said, "Look Giles why don't you go back to the house get some sleep and take a shower and come back in the morning. The rest of us will stay with Buffy." "I don't want to leave her." "Look, Giles," Xander chimed in, "you're not going to do her any good in the shape you're in. Go get some rest and then come back." The others finally convinced him to go. Tara and Dawn went with him since Dawn had school the next morning. The rest of them continued their vigil in the waiting room taking turns going in and talking to Buffy, each hoping that she would wake up soon.
