Dawn woke up and stretched. She was looking forward to school. She had really found a best friend in Melody. Melody was always over the house. Dawn was still trying to get an invite over to Melody’s but she didn’t push it. She knew Melody didn’t have much money and figured she was embarrassed about where she live. Dawn didn’t care but she could understand why Melody would be a little shy about it. She went Dawn stairs to get breakfast. “Morning, mom,” she said cheerily.

“Morning, sweetie,” Joyce replied. “Cereal okay for breakfast?”

“Sure, mom,” Dawn replied grabbing a box and pouring herself a bowl. Joyce turned to Dawn to take the cereal box from her.

“Who are you?” she asked and dropped to the floor.

“Mom!” Dawn cried. She bent over her mother and tried to wake her up. When she couldn’t she ran to the phone and dialed 911.

Melody sat in homeroom impatiently checking her watch. It wasn’t like Dawn to be late. When the final bell rang signaling the start of the school day Melody sighed. I guess Dawn’s out sick today, she thought to herself. I’ll have to call her after school and see if she’s feeling all right.

Dawn sat in the hospital waiting room. She hadn’t been allowed to see her mom since she had been brought in. She had called Buffy as soon as she got here and was just waiting for her to get here. At that instant Buffy pushed through the waiting room door with Riley close behind. She spotted Dawn and gave her a big hug. “Hey, kiddo,” she said. “How’s mom?”

“I don’t know,” replied Dawn. “They haven’t told me anything since we got here.” Just then a young man walked up to them.

“Hi, I’m Ben,” he said. “Are you Buffy?”

“Yes,” Buffy replied. “Is my mom all right?”

“She’s fine,” Ben assured her. “The doctors are still running some tests. They’re not sure yet what caused her to collapse.”

“Can we see her?” Buffy asked.

“Sorry,” Ben said apologetically. “The doctors are still running tests. It may be a couple of hours.”

“All right,” Buffy replied. “Thank you.”

“No problem,” Ben said and walked off.

Melody got back to her room after school and picked up the phone to call Dawn.

“Hello,” her friend answered the phone.

“Hey, Dawn, it’s Melody,” she replied. “I was just calling to see how you were feeling since you weren’t in school today.”

“Thanks, Melody,” Dawn replied. “I’m okay. My mom fainted this morning so I was at the hospital.”

“Oh, no,” Melody said. “Is she okay?”

“Yeah,” Dawn replied. “She’s home now. The doctors ran a bunch of tests but they couldn’t find anything wrong. They told her she should just rest.”

“Oh,” Melody said. “Do you want me to come over and help make dinner so your mom doesn’t have to?” Dawn had found out that Melody was a good cook and had convinced Melody to start teaching her how to cook.

“Sure,” Dawn answered. “That’s be great.”

“OK. See you in a few,” Melody said and hung up.

Buffy was really worried about Riley. If he didn’t get to a doctor soon he was going to die. She finally found him in the old Initiative caves.

“Riley,” she said. “You need to get to the doctor before it’s too late.”

“Buffy, if I go to him I’m not going to be the same,” Riley said.

“What are you talking about?” Buffy asked confused.

“You're getting stronger every day,” Riley answered. “More powerful. I can't touch you. Every day, you're just ... a little further out of my reach.”

“So what?” Buffy replied angrily. “You think I’m going to bail on you because you don’t have super powers?” That’s not why I’d bail on you, she thought.

“It’s human nature,” Riley replied calmly.

Buffy sighed. This was getting ridiculous. She didn’t want to lie to him but she also didn’t want him to die so she said, “Nobody has ever known me the way you do. Nobody.” Well, nobody except for Giles and my friends, she thought. “I've opened up to you in ways that I've never opened up to …” she trailed off not able to complete that lie. In all honesty she’d never really opened up to Riley, she just used him because he was safe. Feeling guilty about that she continued, “I need you with me. I need you healthy.”

Riley finally agreed to go with her and they went to find the doctor.
