Unless you can do absolutely everything with it that you do with IE, I'm not trying it.

Well I would love to try it but my computer which is an antique POS won't let me do ANYthing. I don't have IE anymore, I have Mozilla which is ok but won't do all that I need. And apparently everything did not load correctly when we tried to put in the new hard drive and ended up reinstalling the old wiped drive, cause now I cannot use turbo lister, can't install any media or music players..I tried to fix the problem but despite google and Microsoft help, I'm back where I started..AAAARRRRGGGG! I have COMPUTER ENVY!!!..tears out hair...

Well, its not as good at having big gaping security holes that let worms, viruses, spam, spyware and popups infest your computer but other than that it'll do everything Exploder will do and more. Of course that's just the browser, Fedora is an operating system. There's a slight difference there.

The only down side to Fedora is that there are games that won't run on Linux, so if you're a gamer (lamer?) you'll probably want to keep the inferior OS. If what you're looking for is something that has a complete office suite (Open Office), browser (Mozilla), graphics editing package (Gimp [Gnu Image Manipulation Program]), email client (Evolution), and a big stack of other cool features and applications for zero dollars down and zero dollars per month (MS equivalents total cost of about $800.00 for OS+Apps) then you might want to give it a try. Oh yeah, and any flavor of Linux is far more secure and has been immune from viruses so far, so that's another 40 or 50 canoles not out of pocket for antivirus software.

Ok, so educate me some more.

My job has me using 3Ds max mostly. I'm not a gamer, but it's high end gamer modeling and animation software (not what I'm using it for), and I'd also like to use it at home. I also use other software that's the standard stuff on pc's and macs, like the adobe suite, and AutoCAD Architectural desktop. I'm forced to use windows at work, but I'd be open to using linux at home.

What I want to know is... is the lack of virus attacks due to linux being less popular making attacks less effective and therefore less attractive for the attackers? Also, I'm thinking of upgrading to a faster multiprocessor machine at home, and partitioning the hard drive so I can run two OS's, so I could brouse the net using linux, and use windows to run my software that linux doesn't yet support.

I thought I'd responded to this previously. I must have done the initial post and not remembered to confirm it.

In any case, I'm sure that part of the reason for there being fewer attacks on linux systems is the relatively small percentage of linux systems. That said, the linux system has a much more secure design that makes them less susceptable to viruses. As a linux user (not root), you may have execute permissions for a program but no write permissions for it. That means that if you download a virus and it attempts to corrupt an executable program it will fail unless the user who downloaded the virus has write permissions for the targeted program. In the same way a virus that actually infects one user is not able to be spread to any other user files because of the file permissions.

Incidentally, some of the most powerful graphics rendering systems in use today are Unix and linux systems. Pixar's movie "Toy Story" for example was created on Sun Solaris systems.

Here's an open source application you might be interested in (probably you know more about this than I since you're in the biz):

www.blender3d.org

I believe there are versions of this that run on windows as well as various flavors of unix/linux.
