This war scares me a lot. It’s not that I think anything major is going to happen, because, let’s face it, Iraq isn’t much of a match for the United States. Rather, what scares me is what the very fact that this war has even been allowed to take place may represent. Americans have always been proud of their country, and I see nothing wrong with that (Canadians are like that too, in a more subtle manner) but lately it has become full-fledged jingoism. They seem to have confused nationalism and patriotism. They’ve confused simply love of country for the belief that there is something inherently superior about them. We’ve all seen what this leads to, I think – scary places.
The U.N. has proven itself to be what we all knew it was: an illusion. The United States government is happy to listen and support the U.N. when the U.N. supports them, but when the U.N. disagrees, this happy little arrangement falls apart. This is a remarkable display of the true nature of U.S. foreign policy, marked by a belligerent and destructive self-interest. And, sadly, there is little the U.N. can do. Can you possibly imagine them sanctioning the U.S. for violating international law like they’ve done to so many other countries in the past? Can you really see Bush at a war crimes tribunal? Of course not. After all, was Kissinger ever tried? No, they gave him the fucking Nobel Peace Prize.
With the old superpowers dissolved, the U.S. controls everything: the weapons of mass destruction (Good point, Sarah. They are so ready to disarm Iraq, but when will they disarm themselves? And, more poignantly, is there any way to force them to disarm? I think not) and the economy. There isn’t a nation on Earth that doesn’t have it its economic interests tied to the U.S. If they control everything, even, through economic and military intimidation, the other governments of the world, how can we resist them?
The “fictitious” (thank you, Michael Moore) election of George W. Bush is bad enough. What happens if they, in their nationalistic pride, elect someone worse? They’ve already rewritten the constitution, limiting freedom of speech and instituting fascist laws allowing the invasion of privacy (for example, e-mail) without a warrant. They’ve already adopted such malign, barbaric slogans as “if you’re not with us, you’re against us.” They’ve already been working to label protestors and other dissenters as “terrorists.” What next? Scary question.

By the way, has anyone seen the list of nations who belong to the so-called “Coalition of the Willing”? Talk about spin-doctoring. Here’s the supporting nations:

Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and Uzbekistan.

Wow, Eritrea supports the war! Then we’d all better get on board as well!

- Peace,
Colin Loughran
