The UN does consider its main concern nuclear power -- or disarmament at the very least. The reason why they focus on Iraq rather than the U.S. is because Iraq is "non-compliant" regarding its nuclear arsenal, while the U.S. apparently is complying beautifully. I actually don't know much about the regulations themselves, but I have always been of the opinion that the U.N. is structured rather unfairly, and potentially out-of-date (what with its Security Council consisting of 60's superpowers). Can anyone explain the regulations?

Anyway, I left this sitting for a few days because I wanted to see how things were going to unfold. I now feel incredibly uneasy. I also have an overwhelming desire to punch Donald Rumsfeld in the face (is that non-objective? nah... ;)). If any of you were watching his address to the press on Friday, a reporter asked him what the government was planning to do regarding potential civilian casualties. Instead of answering the question, Rumsfeld urged the viewers to be mindful of "the innocents that lost their lives in the September 11 attacks." Which is all well and good -- except the Iraqis weren't behind those attacks! I've been watching CNN quite frequently in the past few days, and it's been irresponsible journalism at its best -- speculative and insubstantial. I don't think any of us are going to get the real story until this is all over, and, even then, we probably won't get all of it. Incidentally, is anyone else disgusted by the code name "Operation Iraqi Freedom" when Rumsfeld et al. have clearly stated the objective of the war as disarmament rather than freedom? More manipulation of public opinion at work. I was also disgusted to see CNN reporters do a "humor" sort of piece on Iraqi soldiers attempting to surrender to journalists. Yeah, people fearing for their lives that much sure is funny. :P

I'm also curious to see what will happen between the Turks and the Kurds after this, and if the U.S. will intervene then. I don't think any of this will be over for quite some time. Incidentally, the U.S. is now reporting casualties on its own side in the *rear* bits of its troops. I hope they aren't acting too hastily and trying to secure Baghdad too quickly -- that'll just cost them.
