Subject: A semi-complaint

Okay, this isn't really a full-scale criticism. But remembering that the "Way It Could Be" thread got moved to here, I think it counts.

Having worked a bunch of faires in various venues, and merchanted at others, one thing that I've noticed happens a lot is that the staff-only area - 'backstage', as it were - tends to be pretty primitive. At venues with indoor capacity like Hammond, it means a lot of people and equipment stuffed into a very small space. At outdoor venues, it means a lot of dust, damp, and filth. Sanitary facilities tend to be very limited and overburdened. And any form of craft service (aka “food”) is unusual.

Most faire vets, myself included, usually shrug off these problems as par for the course; it’s in nature of the shows we do that we need to rough it a little (or a lot). However, the CT faire has seriously raised the bar on backstage care: flush toilets, storage space, and hot food provided all day long! What I want to know is this: how has CT managed to do this on a renfaire budget? And how can other faires in the region accomplish the same thing?

More a hopefully-constructive inquiry than a complaint, I guess. But I’d still like some answers, if anyone has any to share!

- Rob

Well to be completely honest we have a very large volunteer base. We also run a Live Action Role Playing game, www.mythicaljourneys.com, and that provides us with a rich pool of talent to pull from. Most of our "workers" are not in paid positions yet so we can afford to pamper them along with our actors, vendors, and any other ribbin wearer.

As to how can other faires do it...<shrug> I have no idea.

*G* Of course, the folks of St. Josephs (who sell the stew) openly advertise that they use only fresh vegetarians in their vegetarian stew! ;-D
