The Puri ashram was in the charge of Hariharananda while he was with YSS. He split with YSS around 1973 and kept control of the ashram.

YSS tried to regain control by litigation, but Hariharananda won the case on the basis of having occupied the ashram for a significant time.

The Indian law may be from English civil law which allows someone who has occupied a premises unopposed for 12 years to claim ownership.
