Subject: Dangers of Kriya yoga?


I recently started following the SRF teachings but have some worries about the potential dangers of kriya.

I have read in books by the Ramakrishna Mission that without proper supervision, Kriya can be very dangerous, even causing madness.

Is this true? If so, under what circumstances? Surely such a powerful technique should only be taught face to face?
