My humble opinion?: try the chair, it works wonders.
I like myself the half-way lotus with back support. I sit on a semi-soft pillow to support my lower back and I enjoy the bliss afterwards.
If you are not a kriya practicioner I highly recommend : Yoga Mind and Body from Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center; also a nice addition would be The Sivananda Commpanion to Yoga from the Sivananda Yoga Center.

In Self-Realization Fellowship we practice the energization exercises. These excersises are a combination of pranayama with hatha yoga asanas.
If you ever practiced martial arts of the soft fit school, you will notice that some of the postures and movements seem very similar to Tai Chi or perhaps Qin qon. (king kong

I'm not sure if I understood you correctly, but be very careful with having expectations of the practice itself. Many novices are seeking instant gratification in Yoga such as Siddhis and mind powers. The yoga recipe has two important components that many of us neglect at the beginning. It is by God and the Guru's grace and after dedicated self-effort that we attain the ultimate goal.

Nevertheless any Yoga practice brings benefit in body mind and soul.

Another thing you may consider is never to practice any given exercise without profesional guidance. Injury may occur as result of trying to achieve the perfect balance, if you know what I mean.

Never underestimate the danger of any yoga practice.
