"Now we have people praying to Yogananda and the gurus for help and salvation, when his original message was one of empowering the person doing the praying himself; that he HAD to save himself and he did have that power within himself, not because he was connected to the gurus through SRF but because he was a human being."

Be careful not to project your own image onto what was really taught. I dispute that yours is an accurate interpretation of what Yogananda actually taught. Praying to the guru's was always a part of his teachings as is shown very clearly in many tape recordings of his speeches, and his verifiable writings.

In "Autobiography of a Yogi" we read how even from an early age Yogananda would pray to Lahiri Mahasaya, and how he once miraculously received healing from him.

You can read how on the ship to America he prayed to his guru Sri Yukteswar when finding himself unable to speak to his audience. His message was not one of self reliance alone.

The Avatar belief is another matter, but it is hard for most of us to understand how an Avatar would behave. For example Jesus displayed anger towards the moneychangers in the Temple. He may have changed water to wine as a boy, but most of his childhood and youth was probably unspectacular. As a baby he probably caused his parents the usual problems.

Lord Buddha may have been an Avatar, but he still had to meditate to achieve his enlightenment.

The truth is that we do not really know how an Avatar descends and expresses himself through a normal human body and brain. When an Avatar is born how much is transcendent wisdom, and how much is the normal baby character? This is not a question most of us would be able to answer.
