I agree with you-in the mythic sense of what Avatars are believed to be.

But I humbly offer the following:

Look at the Lahiri Mahasay quote post.

What/how does he say Krishna should be thought as?

His description could be said to be the description of Avatara awareness.

Anyone, teaching from that awareness, as indicated by him, could be said to be manifesting Avatara awareness, when viewed with that understanding.

A person that brings Knowledge (Jnana) from that awareness could be said to be a Jnanavatara. A person showing the path of Yoga, established in that state, could be called a Yogavatara, etc.

Maybe this is the understanding that should be considered, in regards to SRF claiming that some great men are Avatars. Lahiri Mahashays path is very unique and down to earth. He seems to have removed the myth and mystery from yoga and showed a realistic and sane path to realization.
