Subject: Kutasta

Dear friends

There is good satsang on this board. I have read since 2001 with much benefit and enjoy the posts by Mike, Ketch, Hendrik, Kashi and Dwanayu greatly. This is my 1st post.

I am interested in the stages of the spiritual eye. B. Sanyal addresses this in his Gita and it was posted some time back. Seems one sees the lighted kutasta, then the magnified kutasta, then you peirce the star. Then one must pierce the nada bindu in the star. Finally one passes the point of thoughts and enters sahasrara and attains nirvikalpa. This is what I gather. There was much debate a month ago as to whether the last stage features Bliss, though all agree it is non-dual. The goal seems to be permanent lodging in sahasrar, though Ramakrishna said he came down to the throat to talk of God. I don't fully understand why he would do this.

Yogananda reportedly told Kriyananda and Roy Davis that few saints are fully liberated for 'they are content to experience the bliss of God (Isvara?)for millions of years before going beyond it (to Brahman?)." He told Roy to make sure and "go all the way this time." The way Roy handles this is by being sure to release all relative experiences for the highest experience or to contemplate Pure consciousness (Brahman). He says do not let down your sankalpa (determination) or effort and 'rely' on Grace until Grace actually dawns and liberates you. Good advice. SRF simply says to just keep the mind riveted on the center of whatever is seen and do not strain (or beg)and keep still. So one has to keep on with kriya 'ceaselessly' not looking for results (other than liberation?). That has been hard with my past emotional/devotional temperment.

I am not refusing the bliss that surely pours out of the star and seems to be from a personal relation with Isvara, but I want the highest, and ego always seems to get in there and imagine sidetracks. Roy Davis is one that insists the ultimate is a state of pure Being. No-doubt without an observer it is indiscribable.
Nevertheless, I think sankalpa and purushkar (willpower) are the guide until kundalini awakes through the grace of the guru. I want my sankalpa fixed on the highest.

Yogananda (my guru)does not include sahasrara or 4rth kriya which does not worry me as I figure he gave enough and knew what he was doing. Still, I am interested in what is essentially done in this 4rth kriya.

I have done kriya 10 years and came from a Christian background. I am now at a stage where I do not get into devotional bhavas, but rely on kriya. This is wonderful as I had many dark age conceptions and fears of a dictator God and guilts from past lives floating in my unconscious. I have seen a few people in seeming devotional bhava samadhis and their action is non-dharmic during the day. This is good reason for raja yogins to avoid emotion if at all possible in dhyana. It is too impure and selfish. That is my own experience talking. This move has not been forced but was a slow process considering my Christian upbringing and SRF. Vivekananda also recomended raja and jyana yoga and said during meditation the emotions should not be entertained. I have the quote somewhere--I should quote it exact if I could find the book.

I have seen references to the kutasta other places and lineages including Ramakrishna's. Some lineages describe pentrating it as a necessity and the desription is close to Yogananda's. Swami Rama and Sri Vidya tradition is close. Many talk of penetrating bindu, passing om nada and going to sahasrar, though they do not mention the star. I am always happy to read these experiences and see similarities. However, many traditions or scriptures cloak the experience in symbols.
I am most grateful for the kriya lineage we are in, for it is so direct, holds nothing back, and is natural.

If anyone adds anything I am grateful.

Pranams to all kriyabans

Sundarar
