Hyperventilation is a result of overbreathing, usually breathing too fast. It's effects are generally unpleasant including "dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, belching, bloating, dry mouth, weakness, confusion, sleep disturbances, numbness and tingling in your arms or around your mouth, muscle spasms in hands and feet, chest pain, and palpitations."

See http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003071.htm

There are many reasons to suppose that the pleasant effects of Kriya are not caused by hyperventilation.

1) Many people experience no apparent changes in consciousness from Kriya for years, then bliss does come. However they may be breathing in virtually the same way as in their previous Kriya practice when they experienced nothing.

2) The spiritual bliss is not always felt immediately after Kriya pranayama but after a period of deep meditation afterwards. During this time the breathing will have been able to return to a natural condition.

3) Kriya can be effective even if only practiced mentally.

4) If it were possible to simulate the bliss felt by deep Kriya practice simply by hyperventilating, then this would be a very common practice amongst some. E.g. it would be better, cheaper and easier than sniffing glue or using illegal drugs. There should be plenty of books and websites explaining how to do it, along with large medical studies, not to mention an army of politicians trying to frame laws regulating how people breathe.

Having said that it may well be that some people do experience a form of hyperventilation when they start Kriya, and they might mistake that for a spiritual experience.
