Thanks anonymous.The definition of Avatara I am citing is the tradtional Hindu definition.Try telling Ramanuja that Krishna or Rama were once mortals who had achieved liberation,were then born in some sort of elevated 'Master' role.Krishna and Rama were NEVER mere elevated mortals ,they were GOD,eternally perfect appearing as human beings for the sake of their devotees.
This is not necessarily my belief and thank you for enlightening me on Yogananda's teaching concerning these matters.However I remain insistent that we should be careful when we are borrowing Hindu concepts and modifying them to fit our own picture of things.
