Ron, I appreciate your sharing your experience and opinion here. Certainly, even in the "traditional" kriya lines, kechari is not a prerequisite for first Kriya pranayama. Enlightenment via Kriya is possible with just the first Kriya alone, according to Sri Lahiri himself. Therefore enlightenment via Kriya must be possible without kechari. If enlightenment via Kriya is possible without kechari, and if enlightenment requires bridging the spine-medulla gap, clearly that gap must be bridged by some process of the first kriya other than kechari.
