Yes, I think that was a great move on Joss' part to demand that Zoe and Wash be married, and not just the usual tension-filled sexy singles we see on dramas. This way, we are shown how a marriage with unconventional gender roles can be successful. They can still have the same ups and downs as traditional marriages and survive it all with romantic excitement intact - I love the way that, at the end of this ep, Zoe and Wash dashed out of the dining room for a little hot monkey lovin'. Their bond is strong and their routine is certainly far from dull.

Anyway, their's plenty of sexy-single tension between Inara and Mal for the whole show. And with the great bisexual twist, it goes above and beyond what is represented on most dramas.
