Post hole digger. For digging holes. Usually for digging deep, narrow holes suitable for setting posts. Like fence posts. So, how often do you figure the average farm family is going to need to use a post hole digger? I'm thinking maybe once or twice a year at most, but I've never actually lived on a farm, so I can hardly claim to have any actual knowledge of the subject. But if that's even close, then it might make good economic sense for a whole community to chip in on a communal postholer - or for one farmer or shopkeep to buy a postholer and rent it out to whoever needs it.

Of course, I could just be entirely off base. That has been known to happen.
