Subject: If Kaylee doesn't take Simon, can I have him? (Spoilers, "Ariel")

It's official: I'm in love. He is so sweet with River that he's won my heart completely. Sean Maher and Summer Glau really do make wonderful siblings. Simon's love for River, and her love for him, filtered through her tortured brain, really made this ep for me.

I just loved the entire intensity of this ep. It took me completely by surprise that Jayne was ready to sell Simon and River up the, well, river, but it makes sense: the guy's got a stunted sense of morals, one enormous chip on his shoulder, and a slightly dysfunctional brain. Mal's method of getting through to him was fairly harsh, but hey--with Jayne, it doesn't pay to beat around the bush. And I love, absolutely love, that Simon is now going to be Jayne's biggest fan.

Simon--just lovely. *Sigh* He's given up so much for River--and she knows he has--and he's willing to risk even more to help her. He's a smart guy, Simon is. His whole plan was almost foolproof. Too bad it wasn't Jayne-proof, but it was a great plan. Loved his coaching on medical jargon, and the tenderness he displays with River . . . can I keep him? Please?

And Mal's my runner-up. Again, smart, but without Simon's naivete, he's able to see Jayne's actions for what they were. I love how, at the beginning, he tells Jayne loud and clear that they're not dumping or selling out the Tams. Once Jayne's gone, though, he turns his tough talk on Simon, letting him know that if River becomes a risk to the crew, Something Will Be Done. But even that softens into a gentle, "She's getting worse, isn't she?" And then the end--woohoo! I was pretty sure Mal wouldn't really kill Jayne, but that was one harsh lesson. Necessary and to the point, though. You *don't* mess with someone under Mal's protection without Mal taking it personally. I like that in a man.

River--Simon may be smart, but River's the genius. I like that we're getting a glimpse into what may be wrong with her. We're also getting a clearer glimpse of her abilities. There's something especially horrible about her intelligence and her obvious gifts being twisted so horribly. In "Shindig," she adapted instantly to the Cockney guy's accent. Could it be they were trying to make her a weapon--the perfect spy?

And the Hands of Blue. Those were some scarycreepy gentlemen. Yikes.

Terrific ep. I very much hope someone hasn't pulled the plug, because if the show's this good this early, it should be given a chance to grow.
