I really liked this episode. This type of episode was generally handled poorly by Star Trek and its various offspring. But here, I really felt the sense of dread and hopelessness that permeated the crew.

>>> " 'Caveats and addendums' - Some of us here and at ATPo use bad grammar for fun. Mal doesn?t seem to know any better. Do folks with genuine bad grammar really know these words? At least Mal says 'addendums' instead of 'addenda.'"

I see Mal as fundamentally being a backwoods hick, but with an education.

>>> "But, it bothers me that everyone wants to call ships she."

Why? If the crew of "Serenity" speaks english as their primary language, then I would expect that they inherited many of the english traditions. Why shouldn't they also inherit the tradition of calling the ship "she".

>>> "Jayne's story - How many of us would really want such a loyal guy hanging around us for very long?"

It certainly explains some of Jayne's actions after the train robbery. I sure wasn't witnessing much loyalty there.

>>> "Jayne is always trying to keep him out of the inner group on the Firefly. "

Apparently, we have yet to learn something about Jayne's background that would explain his nearly open hostility to the doctor. I will be fascinated to learn what it is.

>>> "Mal knows precious little about anything in the ship. "

It is not clear to me that this is the case. He appears to have a general knowledge of the ship and its operations. I agree that a manager should know what is going on within his operations, but if the tasks are diverse, then the best he could hope for is a general knowledge of the overal operation. By the same token, there is nothing worse than a manager who thinks he knows more than (and micro-manages) his specialists.

I do appreciate the scene where Mal drags Wash away from Zoe and orders him back to the bridge. As the only pilot, Wash is responsible for discharging his duties for the safety of all the crew, not just his wife. At that moment, his wife was not his primary duty.

>>> "Who is your favorite Firefly character?"

I can't say yet. I suspect that once we know more about Zoe, she will be it. She is the strongest and most empowered female in the crew. She appears also to have Mal's sense of ethics and justice (such as it is).

As I have stated before, I like strong female characters. I do not like weak eratic whining female characters. This dislike unfortunately rules out 95% of the shows currently on television.
