I felt that Joss is telling his story in Firefly.

A young idealist Mal fought a war against mighty 'Alliance' who is dominating all the world. He lost miserably in the battle of Serenity. And he became a drifter now.

He found a small wrecked firefly class ship and named it Serenity. Everyone told him he cannot fly that ghing. But he saw something different, he saw a freedom.

He gathered a small talented crew who also longing for freedom from Alliance around him. With help of them he flew Serenity to the world that Alliance cannot touch. They took any job which might not be legit, to maintain their life.

Serenity represents freedom they have, that's why he cannot abandon his ship.

Now if you put Joss to Mal's position and BtVS to Serenity. I think you can think of 'Hollywood/Media' to Alliance. Talented but misunderstood crews (writers and actors) are helping him.

It struck me at the last scene, when Mal first found Serenity the ship nobody thought that it could fly again. His face was full of awe and love. It might be the Joss who is watching his creation, that gave him a small freedom from 'Alliance'.
