-destroyed most of Americas remaining air power
-Guam fell in Japanese possession
-Filipino's & Americans gave up the islands May 6
-Americas offesnse towards Japan : General MacArthur move through Austrila, New Guinea & then to Philipines
-Admrial Chester moved through Hawaii, to Japanese outpost & then to invade JApan
-battle of coral sea america won vs. Japan
*Battle of Midway
-4 day battle
-U.S. navy destroyed 4 of Japanese air craftcarriers
*Guadalcanal
-6 month battle
-Japan forced to abandon the island
-w/ aid from Australians & New Zelanders they held back Japan

Prosperity
*War-Induced Economic Rcovery
-economic problems of 1930s virtually vanished before the wartime industrial expansion
-after 1939 federal spending was putting more money into the economy
-personal incomes n some areas grew by 100% or more
-wartime production created shortage of consumer goods
-many wage earners put their money into savings
-which helped keep econmoic boom alive in the post war years

Mexican-American War Workers
-Large # of mexican workers entered u.s.
-U.S. & Mexican gov.agreed on BRACEROS program:would be allowed to be admitted for limited time fora specific jobs
*Employmen Gains for Mexican Americans
-during 1930 depression Mexican lost jobs
-during wartime they were rehired
-300,000 served in u.s. military
-tension & conflict w/ Mexicans gangs called pachucos
-they stood out by zoot suits: long loose jackets w/ padded shoulders,baggy pants tied @ ankels,long watch chains,broad-brimmed hats & gresed duck tail hair style
-the style was a symbol of rebellion
*Zoot-Suit Riots
-4 day riot
-sailor went into a mexican community
-police did not restrian the saliors
-they arrested the hispanics
-L.A. passed a law prohibiting the wearing of zoot suits


Chinese American& the War
-American allience enhanced both legal& social status of chinese Americans
-Congress repealed the Chinese exclususion acts
-permanent residents of u.s. of chinese discent finally permitted to become citizens
-racial animosity did not disappear but did decline
-began taking jobs in war plants
-they moved out of relatively isolated world of chinatowns
-a higher proportion were drafted then other national groups
