Subject: Ch12 - Early Oppostion to Slavery

I. Early Opposition to Slavery
A. American Colonization Society(ACS)
i. wanted to gradually send slaves back to Africa without compromising southern sensibilities or property rights
a. they would receive funds from private donations and then compensate the slave owners
b. some slaves were sent back to Africa and w/ the help of the ACS formed the nation of Liberia
B. Failure of Colonization
i. funding was not enough for every black person
a. more black slaves were being born than transported and the ACS couldn’t keep up
ii. blacks themselves, having almost 4 generations in America at this point, had no desire to go back to a land they knew almost nothing about
iii. by the 1830s, it seemed those opposed to slavery had reached a dead end
