I. The Rise of Feminism
A. Reform Movements and the Rise of Feminism
i. in the 1830s and 40s, women began to form reform movements for domestic restrictions
a. women felt it unfair that they were to focus all their energies on the family and men were to be the only ones earning money
ii. in 1848, a convention in Seneca Falls, NY brought about the document called a “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions”
a. this launched women’s suffrage(the right to vote)
b. also launched the rejection of the notion that men and women should be assigned separate “spheres” in society
iii. Quaker women played a large role in the rise of feminism
a. all but one of the women who drafted the “Declaration of Sentiments” document was a quaker
B. Limited Progress For Women
i. many women founded seminary schools for the education of women
a. this brought about the first ordained woman minister
b. some women expressed their feminism by dressing differently by wearing long bloomers and shorter skirts, but ultimately abandoned the idea b/c it took away from their message
ii. feminists benefited from association w/ other reform groups like abolitionists, but also suffered b/c feminism often took a back seat to the issues of slavery
