New Manifest Destiny
-some developments help shift the focus of americans to places across the sea
-most looked b/c fear of lossing supplies of natural reasources
-overall foriegn trade was becoming important
*Increasing importance of trade
-america thought of aquring some colonies
-america afriad they would be left out of the imperial movement
-scholars looked to social darwism to say strong nations that dominate over weaker ones is part of the laws of nature
*Intullectual Justification for imperialism
-John Fiske a popular writer made a pridiction that english speaking people would control every land that was not an established nation
-scholars gave thier stamp of approval
-most wanted to help spread thier ideas to the barbarism races
*Alfred Thayer Mahan
-was a captin foe U.S. navy
-sea power was a way for domestic economy,foreign commerce,strong merchant marine,navy to defend trade routes, & colonies
-he really wanted was for the u.s. to bulid canals across the isthums of central america
-he wanted this for then we could take hawaii and other pacific islands
-he did fear we did not have a big enough navy to to envade the islands
-but in 1870s & 1880s gov. put together a ship buliding program which by 1898 we were 5th strongest naval power
-in 1900 we were the 3rd
