A. Self-Sufficient Societies
More and more Americans settled on the islands in order to dominate their economic and political needs
1. King Kamehameha – a chieftain in Hawaii
a. in 1810, he established his dominance over most other chieftains
b. welcomed and helped Americans develop a trade between Hawaii and China
c. soon after, missionaries, merchants, & planters began to settle
i. by the turn of the century, most of the native population had died due to diseases brought over by new settlers
d. 1887 – U.S. negotiates a treaty to open navy base at Pearl Harbor
e. sugar had become basis of economy
2. Queen Lilinokalani
a. 1891 – was “elected”
b. she set out to challenge American control of the islands
c. 1898 – Hawaii is annexed by the U.S.
3. Acquisition of Samoa
a. U.S., Great Britain, & Germany all secured treaty rights for Samoa
b. all three countries fought over Samoa for ten years coming close to war
c. in 1899, the U.S. & Germany divided the islands – Britain received other territories in the Pacific
