A. Annexation of Puerto Rico
1. 1820’s - Puerto Rican society became increasingly distinctive & resistance to Spanish rule began to emerge
a. uprisings began to occur
i. Lares Rebellion – most important
-crushed by Spanish in 1868
-growing resistance prompted reforms
*abolition of slaver in 1873
*Puerto Rican representation in Spanish parliament
2. 1900 – Foraker Act
a. ended military rule and established a formal colonial government
3. 1917 – Jones Act
a. declared Puerto Rico as a U.S. territory and made all Puerto Ricans U.S. citizens
B. Sugar Economy
1. Americans began establishing large sugar plantation on the island
2. Puerto Ricans became entirely dependant on imported food
3. the Puerto Rican economy depended mainly on the sugar economy
