A. Moderates vs. extremists
i. extremists
a. William Lloyd Garrison
-called for division of slave states from non-slave states
-called for full equality, including women
ii. moderates
a. not as violent as extremists but just as passionate
iii. both groups came together to help the Amistad Africans
a. amistad was a ship full of African slaves bound for the u.s. when the slaves took over the ship
b. after much protest from anti-abolitionist groups, the government let the ship go back to Africa
B. the importance of literature
i. after violence over abolitionism and antislavery movements occurred, authors began writing about slavery and the lives of slaves
a. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the most influential books of all time
- sold over 300,000 copies in the first year of publication
C. after 30 years, abolitionism was portrayed as a large part of society and had shown how slavery was quickly dividing America
