I. Black Hawk War
A. Government took strides towards removing natives from the East but still some remained
1. Last war was in 1831-1832 between Illinois settlers and Sauk and Fox Indians under warrior Black Hawk
2. An earlier agreement gave US the land, but Black Hawk and followers refused to agree its legality
a. Rival tribe gave the lands away
3. Indians were hungry after traveled and settled in vacant lands of Illinois
a. Locals got scared and put together militia to repel "invaders"
B. Black Hawk War was known for the viciousness of the white military
1. White leaders vowed to get rid of "bandits" and attacked them even though Black Hawk tried to surrender
2. The Sauks and Foxes retreated starving and defeated across the Mississippi River into Iowa
3. Whites and some Indians continued to chase and slaughter them
4. White troops finally caught Black Hawk and sent him on tour of the East
a. Andrew Jackson was one of the men that arranged to meet him
