I was merely questioning the relationship between the highly stylised southern cross on the Eureka flag and the more "accurate" southern crosses that appear on many southern-hemisphere flags such as, for example, those of Victoria, Australia, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands and Brazil.

The good people of AusFlag do not make any connection between the Eureka cross and the cross on the Victorian flag, which in turn provided the model for the Australian federal flag. In fact, they suggest a different origin:

Where do you stand on Australian flag reform? I presume that you're not a get-rid-of-the-English-flag-and-put-a-kangaroo-on-it brigade, but this doesn't mean that you're not in favour of change.

I once asked a guy from NZ about the flag reform debate across the ditch, and in particular what they think about their flag being almost indistinguishable from the Australian flag at a distance. He came up with the interesting suggestion that nothing be changed except the colour, which should become the first green (of course) ensign.

Well, my man, I'm from New South Wales, and our state flag has "the English flag" on it twice: as part of the jack and in the state shield (which also contains a lion). While I would have no objection to changing the state flag so that the shield contained, say, a koala or a wombat or perhaps a platypus, I also fail to see the point in actually doing it.

I also quite like the fact that the Australian and New Zealand flags are virtually indistinguishable to the untrained eye. Australians and New Zealanders are also virtually indistinguishable to the untrained eye, so the flags would seem to represent us pretty well.

Before I was an advocate of CANZUK federation, I restricted my geopolitical ambitions to the formation of a Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand. I still see this as a somewhat more achievable aim, and I think it would be relatively simple to find a flag design that would suit us both.

And while I love my deep green and gold, I would not want to try and put them on the same flag as the jack.

...maybe indistinguishable to the untrained eye but even the least trained of ears can tell the difference!

Given that so much synthesis already exists between the two countries, what do you think of the chances of bringing about a proper union? More especially, I'd be interested in hearing an NZ perspective: do New Zealanders feel the same about Australia as Canadians about the USA? Or Ireland about the UK? It really would help to have some NZ members on this forum...

On the other hand, people from Sydney and Melbourne are viewed with exactly the same suspicion from Western Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, etc.

As to accents, I find that an educated Australian accent and an educated New Zealand accent are extremely difficult to distinguish.
