] Date Posted: 04:07:13 11/29/04 Mon I was watching the BBC World Service News on the CBC channel tonight and they showed a Scots Premiere League soccer game between the Rangers and the Hearts. I assume that this was played in Scotland with Scottish fans. Anyway, somebody was waving a huge Union Jack in the crowd. It stood out above all of the people on that side. This is wonderful! Still, while the flag thing may not be quite so positive as Jim initially thought, it is still encouraging that, in the old attempt to define themselves as what they are not, the Rangers fans have decided that they are British-not-Irish rather than Scottish-not-Irish. Date Posted: 13:11:28 11/29/04 Mon Yes, sadly this phenomenon has more to do with sectarianism than national pride. I guarantee you will find more Union Flags in Ibrox during an “Old Firm” match, than in the rest of Scotland on that particular Saturday afternoon. With St. Andrew’s day approaching, the politicians of the nationalist persuasion are once again reprising their annual calls for the erosion of British identity. Firstly, they want to replace God Save The Queen as our OFFICIAL anthem, with something “more appropriate for modern Scotland”. Top suggestions for this criteria include “A man’s a man for a’ that”, and of course, “Flower of Scotland”. Evidently, a song about the defeat of King Edward’s army, or another espousing the virtues of socialist ethics, are a more appropriate homage to Scottish cultural values than one about our Sovereign. Secondly, they again bring up the fact that the Saltire should fly from all public buildings on St. Andrew’s day, and they describe it as “bizarre” that Scotland’s national flag should be “banned” on the national day, with the Government stipulating that the Union Flag be flown on such days. I happen to agree with the nationalists here. The Saltire should be flown on St. Andrews day, so I have a suggestion that will no doubt placate the nationalists, and will abide by their reasoned arguments. I suggest the Saltire is flown on St. Andrew’s day, and the Union flag on all other days. How’s about that? It certainly is changed days from the era when Scotland was described as “North Britain”. Personally, I blame it on the decline of the Police Box and the Red Phone Booths. Happy St. Andrew’s day tomorrow, to all the Jocks here… [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 15:11:49 11/29/04 Mon However, the controversy is more about parochial nationalism than practicality, and my sardonic suggestion was merely aimed at getting up the noses of the aforementioned. Besides, most of the buildings in question have only one flag pole. If there were more flagpoles, there would be no excuse for their arguments, unless of course they would change tack, and demand two saltires. Their motive is not so much to see the saltire, as to eradicate the Union Flag, so such an approach would not appease them. To use your analogy, it would be like the Bloc Québécois accepting the Maple Leaf and Quebec flag flying side by side with pride. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 20:46:06 11/29/04 Mon I agree Jim. To give you an example of the rabid foaming-at-the-mouth insanity that I am talking about, have a look at the following articles on a, shall we say, left-leaning Scottish website. They will give you a laugh, if nothing else. Union Flag Blair’s Euro Plan I think it is safe to say there are more sane people than these locked up! [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 16:25:51 11/29/04 Mon To quote the late, great Tony Hancock, "Oh, it's a game, innit?" Here we are in 2004, with the Scots banning the Union Jack on St Andrews Day because it is divisive, and the English banning St George's Cross on St George's Day. It's a funny thing, modern England. We've all heard the story about how the Council denied a publican a late-license on St George's Day because it was not considered an "important enough" national festival but granting him a license for Chinese New Year. We all know that Ken Livingstone refused money for the "irrelevant" St George's Day but personally overruled the GLA to force them to have a St Patrick's Day Parade... Can you imagine any such thing happening Up North about St Andrew's Day? I doubt it. Roll on the victim culture... [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 16:57:07 11/29/04 Mon Sure, St. Andrew's day is not ignored north of the border, but neither is it celebrated (nothing like St. Patrick's day). In fact, it is greeted with remarkable apathy by the Scottish Executive, with only the nationalists getting worked up about it. There have been calls recently to make it a public holiday - mostly falling on deaf ears. The stories you describe about St. George's day in England are scandalous, but what else would you expect from Red Ken? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
