Han,

You should be taking a divot with your irons as long as it is not the "crater" type of divot that you see many golfers produce. A small divot is essential in ensuring that you are actually hitting down on the ball and imparting back-spin instead of merely sweeping or scooping the ball into the air.

The tick or burn mark terminology that we use to describe the desired divot size is meant to dissuade the golfer from taking out a chunk of earth. Bear in mind that the deeper the divot the more de-lofted the clubface is at impact, and this is what you want to avoid.
