- My 1 Iron journey -- Steve P., 09:55:38 01/10/08 Thu
Hi all,
I thought I would start a thread on my experiences with same length clubs, specifically 1 Irons, as I found it very hard to find much information out there on the impact of these clubs on the game of a low handicapper. I am a 48 year old male avid golfer with a current index of 2.5. Evaluating the condition of my game and looking to improve my weakest area, 3-5 irons, I am hoping to shave 1-2 strokes off my game with the 1 Iron clubs. Time will tell and I will update this thread as I go along.
P.S. The customer service from 1 Iron is unbelievable!

The theory on your site makes perfect sense . However , As far as the shaft length goes, if length does not matter or does not increase distance, why do all of the long drive competitors use those ridiculously long shafts?
Also , do you have a chart as to the loft of your clubs and if purchased can i have the lofts adjusted to my specs and can i have shafts of my choosing installed?

- Driver tee height -- Tom T, 20:05:28 05/06/08 Tue
Hi David.
Well I've been back playing with my 1irons for about a month and am extremely pleased with them. I shot 83 on Sunday, after 2 years away from the game, I think that is a tribute to your clubs. For all the doubters out there, I hit my 1iron 3 iron about 190 yds. I am no Tiger Woods, but that is better than most of the guys I play with. CLUB LENGTH DOESN'T MEAN SQUAT.
Now for my question, I am still fading the driver way too much. The distance is good, but the ball is still working too far right. I have never hit a driver from a center ball position, so I am still experimenting. How high should the ball be teed? It seems to me that maybe I should try a much lower tee height, and swing the driver more like a fairway wood. I hit my fairway woods very straight. Perhaps even grazing the ground like a 3 wood?
I am still using a "driver swing" with a strong grip and a high tee. This is producing a few good shots mixed in with weak fades. I shot my 83 using my 3 wood off the tee, that's what prompted me to ask.
Thanks, Tom

Hi. I got my clubs and I am hitting them all well, except for the Driver. I just can't seem to stop slicing it. I have always played a little fade with my driver, but this is an honest banana ball. I have been playing the ball a little bit forward, as David suggests. I can hit the 3 and 5 wood of the fairway pretty well, but this driver has me baffled. I am sure it is something I am doing, not the club. Has this happened to anyone else when making the switch from a conventional driver? I could really use some suggestions. Thanks. Tom

- Belly Button in the Centre??? -- Kelly, 11:54:54 05/07/08 Wed
Like the players from the previous two messages, I am having alot of trouble with the driver and three wood. David, your response to Tom T was, "Your belly button should remain in the center of your stance throughout the swing just like with every other club in your bag. The idea is to swing around your body as if your spine were attached to a pole in the ground." I have read this comment from you in several places, and I don't get it.
I assume that you advocate a body turn, resulting in the player ending with almost his/her entire weight on the front foot (like the animated .gif on your home page). How can this be accomplished without some forward, lateral "sway"? If I stand with my feet apart and my weight evenly distributed, and then simply transfer all of my weight to my left foot without turning, the belly button moves laterally at least six to eight inches. Add the body turn to this movement, and the belly button is now in a new area code from where it began.
Perhaps when you say the belly button should stay in the centre you mean along a vertical line drawn through the top of the head, chin, and belly button, and the sway you are warning against is a sway of the hips. Is that correct?
Thanks.

- Trying to understand concept better... -- Alex, 20:28:06 05/02/08 Fri
Hi David,
One comment/question for you:
The reason clubs are 1/2 inch longer than each preceding club is because with all things constant (your swing), the club head will be traveling faster than the shorter club. This compensates for the decrease in loft. Therefore, each longer, lower loft club has a lower trajectory, but increased clubhead speed to compensate, which results in a longer distance. With the 1 Iron system, there is nothing to compensate for the lower trajectory. So theoretically, a 3 iron will have a lower trajectory, but no more distance. In fact, it will lose distance because the ball will be airborne for less time. How does the 1 Iron system create further distances without increasing clubhead speed (given that nobody, especially bad golfers, can control their swing speed)?
And yes, on your website it says you get more distance because you can memorize just 1 swing instead of 12. However, that doesn't explain how a 3 iron with the same clubhead speed as a 9 iron will go farther.
Best,
Alex

I've only used my new 1-Irons three times but that's enough to know I'm going to like them!
I have to relay a little story…I was playing with a long time golfer and good friend who is a low handicapper (I’m a beginner and was having trouble with conventional length clubs). He was curious about my clubs and when he picked up my 3 iron he said, “You can’t get any distance out of this thing, it’s too short”. I explained the single length club theory, but don’t think he bought it.
A little while later we found ourselves in the middle of the fairway, side by side with 210 left to the flag. He was “out” a bit and with his 3 wood placed his shot right on the edge of the green. Here was my chance to show him what the 3 iron could do and I didn’t blow it. I hit a beautiful, high flying ball and placed it 10 inches inside his. He’s not quite as skeptical of the 1-Iron theory now!

- X wedge? -- paul, 22:33:43 04/21/08 Mon
Mr. Lake,
Starting to see some really encouraging things from my set of irons out on the course. Only my second round out with them, and I hit an exceptionally high number of fairways and greens (for me) and posted a decent score even with a singularly horrible putting day. Looking forward to even better things this season.
Given any thought to developing a high lob/X-Wedge? I read in your playing tips archive that for all short shots you like to land the ball as near the hole as possible to minimize the problem of reading the green's break (from my experiences this seems like the best philosophy too) and I would think that the fastest-stopping club would be the one with the most loft. Also, players with fast swing speeds would probably appreciate being able to still take a full shot in the 60-80 yard range where others would hit the lob wedge. Personally, I love hitting [other company's] super-duper-high wedges too much to drop them from my bag, and I like the fact that they also have consistent weights and lengths (though not the same as my 1 Iron specs). But if you made something comparable in loft, I for one would have nothing to stop me from swapping in the 1 Iron wedges (besides being a poor college student, of course).

The concept makes total sense to me. What I am trying to understand is how you come up with the club length. I think I hit my PW more purely then any other club in my bag but all the posts seem to refer to the clubs being made at the 7 iron length. My wrist to floor is 32.5 inches, how long would you make my irons?
The whole idea seems so common-sens-ish..

If the 1-iron #3 iron is no harder to hit than the 1-iron #7 iron, why replace 3&4 irons with 5 and 7 fairway woods? this assumes the idea of shaft length having minimal difference on distance and distance being determind by loft.

- Long short irons -- Jeff, 22:05:39 04/18/08 Fri
I think that virtually all golfers can agree that shorter clubs are easier to hit than the longer clubs.
So the 1-iron system seems to make perfect sense to make those difficult long irons more playable, but conversely, it would seem to make the short irons more difficult.
Everyone knows that the short game is where the "money" is, and the idea of using a sand wedge that is the same length as my 7-iron seems a little crazy. Sort of like you're robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Am I missing something, or are you just trading short-game accuracy for long-game accuracy?

- DAVID LAKE GOLFING HANDBOOK -- JOHN HYNDMAN, 13:37:22 04/19/08 Sat
A few years ago I tried to buy a set of 1 iron clubs but at that time David did not sell internationally (I live in New Zealand). I eventually bought a set on ebay (6,7,8,9,PW,SW,LW,9W,7W,5W,3W.). These clubs immediately transformed my game and within a few weeks went from averaging 90 to breaking 80.
I have found golf difficult because I started at age 47 (I am now 55). I was an athlete in my youth but golf is a hard game to master when started later in life.
David now ships internationally and I have just ordered a 3,4,5 and driver. I am looking forward to trying them out.
I bought David's booklet a few years ago and found it to be a wealth of common sense and excellent advice. David's comment's on the forum are absolutely superb. He is a clear thinker and writes beautifully. Lucid, succinct and engaging prose.
One frustration I have is trying to retrieve some of his gems at a later date. David - have you ever considered writing a book on your golfing philosophy? It would not matter if it was an online book or a hard copy (or both). As long as it was laid out in relevant chapters and well indexed and illustrated.
It strikes me you have enough written material already. Just needs to be organized, collated and edited.
If you ever do this, I would place an order immediately.
Thanks

- Lie Angle -- Roger Davis, 03:15:15 04/17/08 Thu
I'm on the brink of buying a set of 1iron irons, but one specification worries me: The very upright lie angle.
(My WTF measurement is 40".)
One set of irons I now play is Mizuno MP-11. The 8I is 38" long, and has a lie angle of 61*, and it seems a little bit too upright already! At address, if I set up the way I feel comfortable, the toe is up off the ground, not soled out perfectly. At a lie of 63.5*, I'm so afraid the 1iron is going to be just too upright for me.
Please convince me it's going to be okay.

I do fine with half and three-quarter swings, but when I make a full swing contact is made toward the toe on all my irons. I've tried adjusting my setup position to the point of aligning the ball with the extreme heel of the club, but contact is always toward the toe. Any suggestions out there?

Also have you ever done any research to support a theory that I have that swinging the heaviest club I can without loosing any swing speed would I gain a substancial amount of distance because of the heavier club having less resistance to impact or is this theory all wrong Thanks Bill

- A question about the woods -- Tom T, 20:17:39 04/11/08 Fri
Hi David,
I purchased my second set of 1irons a few days ago and am anxiously awaiting them. I played your clubs previously, but a back injury forced me away from the game, and I sold them. After finding the right Chiropractor, I am finally healed and ready to start playing again.
Anyone who doubts that the system works, please don't. The clubs enable you to just think of shots instead of set up, ball position, and swing thoughts. They make golf a game instead of work. I dropped from an 11 to a 7 in 1 month. Hitting what you are aiming at is so much fun.
My question for David is this: I previously played a conventional wood set when I had my last set of 1irons. This time I ordered the driver and 3 wood also. Where is the ball position supposed to be for the woods? Center like the irons, or slightly forward? I am curious because of the slight swing plane difference between a wood and an iron.
Thanks, and again JUST BUY THE CLUBS! You will love them.

When I found out the clubs were cut the same length as my favoret club,9 iron, I knew I wouldn't have any trouble hitting them. I have played sa golf for 10 years so the setup was the same.
It was a cold windy day in Illinois so I only took the 9 and 3 iron and a small bucket of balls. I haven't carried a iron larger than a 5 iron in years. I am telling you, the 3 iron was just as easy to hit as the 9 iron. I may not have the swing speed to keep the 3 and 4 iron but time will tell. Thank you David for a great produce.

My new 1 Irons arrived last Wednesday and they are beautiful and well balanced. You can definitely see and feel the quality that goes into these. Took them to the range on Thursday and started out hitting the #3 iron. I know that you're supposed to follow the tips that are included with the set but I wanted to see if the 1 Iron #3 iron would hit the ball as far as my old #3 iron since it is a couple of inches shorter in club length. My distance with my old #3 iron is 190 yards and I'd of been perfectly happy if the 1 Iron #3 could hit it as far or even a little shorter if I could gain some accuracy. On my first shot I aimed for a small range green at 195 yards that I always aimed for with my old #3 iron. Usually I would end up just short or right on the front edge of the green. I let her rip and the ball headed straight for the flag which made me feel great. But my jaw dropped when I flew the green by 10 yards. My second shot was a repeat of the first and so was my third and fourth. The worst shot I hit with the 1 Iron #3 was a toe hit that went 185 yards and pretty straight.
The #4 all the way through the PW was the same story - straight at the pin and about 5+ yards farther than I'm used to. All the irons are the same club length as my old #8 iron so the 1 Iron wedges are about and inch longer than my old ones which I thought might cause some problems - I was wrong! The 1 Iron wedges are amazing - perfect distance control and right on the pin every time.
I ordered the titanium driver and #5 and #7 wood today. If the woods play anything like the irons I'll be in 7th heaven.

So I just got back from college and got to try my irons set for the first time at the range. For a first impression, I was generally really impressed and happy. With my old NG clubs, I dreaded the longer irons and for a while didn't even carry anything above a 6 iron. Today, though, I was cranking the 4, 5, and 6 irons to the back of the (short-ish) range with a consistency that just wouldn't happen before. The only problem: except for one ball I had teed up that was pretty, about every 3-iron I hit was a wormburner, or at least would've knocked you out cold if you were standing anywhere on its flight path. I don't think I was topping the ball...it just went really, really low, noticably lower than the 4-iron and not travelling as far. I'll keep at it - if there's one thing Mr. Lake has made very clear, it's that one trial can't tell the story of these clubs - but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

- Length of Woods/Driver -- Kelly, 10:51:18 03/15/08 Sat
Just curious. Considering that one of the main assumptions behind this approach is that it isn't the length of the shaft that affects distance as much as it is the loft of the club, why are shafts of the woods/driver so much longer than the length of the irons?
One of the reasons I ask is that I have a W-T-F of 36.5 and my wife has a W-T-F of 31 (barely). We both play 1-Irons, but she has a 7-wood and I don't. It looks and feels like such a nice club that I pulled it from her bag on the range the other day, despite the fact that it would obviously be much shorter than a similar wood cut to my W-T-F. I proceeded to hit five really accurate, straight, high shots to about the distance of my 4-iron (I have never hit a 7-wood before, but based on the mix of clubs in the combo set, I assume that's about the distance one would expect from a 7-wood).
Assuming that I hit the 7-wood the distance that would be expected, would I not hit a similarly shafted 5-wood, 3-wood, or even driver to the distances that you would expect from them (my wife doesn't have any of these clubs in her bag for me to test)? If so, why make them longer and jeopardize clean ball-striking?

- Loss of Distance - Why? -- Kelly (Sad), 18:02:19 03/07/08 Fri
First off, I want to be clear that I am not questioning this concept or the quality of these clubs. I am a BIG fan of the concept: it makes so much sense to me. I also really hope to become a big fan of the clubs (and I'm still optimistic that I will). My objective with this message is just to get some feedback from other users as to what their transition experience has been. Mine, I'm afraid, is not going all that well (and I'm a strong iron player).
I have only had my 1-irons a couple of weeks, and have only hit them about five times at the range. So far, my impression is that the shaft length feels really short from the 3 through 7 irons (but for anyone who is worried about the longer short irons, they are my favourite part of the set - I find them much easier to hit accurately than conventional short irons). However, the sensation of the clubs feeling short is probably to be expected after 30 years of playing conventional clubs. The fact that I am slicing the ball, which has never been a problem for me, is of some concern, but I suspect that this is just part of the growing pains and I'll work that out.
What I wasn't expecting is that I seem to be experiencing a really significant loss in distance, even on flush hits (I've also lost trajectory in the 3 and 4 irons). I say I "seem" to have lost distance because I have only had the clubs on the range and in a simulator, which aren't always the best indicators. However, on the range I'm hitting a full nine iron shorter than I used to hit my Callaway PW. My experience in the simulator today (it's cold here) was even scarier. The simulator was only registering between 146-148 for my seven iron (I hit my X-16 9 iron 150 and my 7-iron 172-175). I thought, "This machine must just not be accurate," and was going to leave it at that when I noticed a demo club sitting against the wall. It was a Snake Eyes Python 7-iron. I picked it up and hit six balls with it: 2 at 173, 3 at 174, and 1 at 176. I grabbed the 1-iron 7-iron again, and hit 5 more balls with it, none of which went over 148!
I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced a significant loss of distance at first and then had it come back? If so, what kind of adjustment did you have to make to gain it back? (Please tell me that it will come back!!! I don't want to go back to conventional clubs - I'm already a believer in principle, I just need the experience to confirm it. I also don't want to have to tell my non-believing friends that they were right and I was wrong - that phrase always leaves a bad taste in my mouth.)
P.S. On a more positive note, I think anyone who is just learning the game should definitely buy these clubs. I believe it takes a really big obstacle from learning the game. I bought a set for my wife, and it has had a tremendous impact on her ball striking, and she has only used them three times! For one thing, off the rack clubs are just too long for her (she petite). However, even more importantly, she now doesn't have to worry about playing different clubs all the time. She used to go around the course using only her 9 iron because it was the only club with which she could make solid contact. The other day at the range and today at the simulator, she was hitting her 5 and 7 consistently solid, and much higher and longer than ever before. Even if I end up switching back to my Callaways (or Snake Eyes Pythons, apparently), I suspect my wife will be using these clubs for a long time to come.

For some reason I got instantly worried about whether or not these clubs conformed with R&A and USGA requirements - especially the new conformation rules that came into effect at the beginning of this year.
Unable to find any information about 1 Iron clubs on the R&A/USGA site I emailed David Lake at just gone 7 o'clock (Oz time) this morning (2 pm Sat USA time).
Within half an hour my worries were no more when I received the following from David Lake. (I hope that you don't mind me printing this, David?)
"Lance,
No golf clubs need to be sent to either the USGA or R&A for conformity evaluation as long as they are manufactured within these organization's specifications. In other words, all golf clubs are considered conforming by default unless they incorporate design elements outside of USGA or R&A promulgated specs. The design and manufacture of 1 Iron Golf clubs fall well within these promulgated specifications and are therefore in full conformity. This includes our driver, fairway woods, and irons.
Thank you,
David Lake"
So, anyone who has any concerns about the legality of your new 1 Irons in competition need worry no more.
Thank you, David.
PS All of this has happened in the last hour and a half.

- 1 Iron Titanium Driver -- Fred, 19:08:19 02/26/08 Tue
Not much has been posted on your forum about your driver so I thought I'd add my two cents worth.
First of all it's a real beauty (your pictures don't do it justice). But the main test is how it hits the ball. I've owned every new (and expensive) driver that the big-name golf companies have come out with for the past five years (ten in all). None of them have even come close to comparing to your 1 Iron Titanium Driver for distance and accuracy. I'm a guy who is more than satisfied with 250 yards off the tee but with your 1 Iron driver I've gained 25 yards on average with the occasional bomb out there at around 290-300 yards. To make it even better is that I'm hitting 9 out of 10 fairways compared to my old 5 out of 10.
My confidence on the tee has increased 100-fold and now I'm glad when there's a group watching me tee off.

- New irons -- Jim, 18:24:12 02/18/08 Mon
I received my new 1 Irons yesterday and wanted to thank you for such quick delivery. My first impression was a great looking set of irons with a classic look at address and thin top line. Took them to the range last evening and hit 80 balls. The clubs felt fantastic - perfect weight, and a real balanced feel. The ball flew straight and true about five yards farther than my other irons and with a higher trajectory. Didn't miss hit a single shot out of 80 balls. After only one time out I can tell that these will definitely help me to reduce my handicap this year. I'm very excited and thanks again for a great idea.

- Just checking in -- Chris - Manassas, Va., 10:45:40 02/03/08 Sun
I'm a 1 Iron Golfer who just wanted to check in and say hi. I used to post here frequently, but over the last year I got a new job which has tragically reduced my rounds. I hope to solve that problem this season.
I haven't had time to read through the "1 Iron Golf Journey" thread below but I'm looking forward to it. I've been using varieties of David Lake's clubs for, it must be, at least six years now--and since I'm still using them you can tell I'm a very satisfied customer. I bought a used set of the now-ancient Outburst series, then moved on to the CERs and now the current generation. This year I conned my wonderful Dad into buying me some current-generation demo irons for Christmas, #'s 6 through PW, and in a month or so plan to fill that out with at least a 5/SW/GW, plus possibly the LW and 7 wood. I already have the current, magnificent driver, 3 wood and 5 wood.
I just want to encourage people who are on the fence to give these a try. David Lake's 30-day tryout warranty is unbeatable and removes the risk factor. Personally I'm not one of those who believes any single golf product (or golf swing for your one-axis fans) will work for every single golfer; human variability, both physical and mental, rules that out. But I believe most who give these clubs a legitimate chance will fall in love with them, if they follow David's tips and suspend past attitudes about club design.
Regardless, I hope 2008 is the best golf year for everyone on this forum.

I have read thru these posts time and again, and after playing to a mid-teens handicap for 20 years and never seeing consistent improvement, I am ready to "re-invent" my swing and thought process. My only question is this- my WTF measurement is 37.25". I noticed on your order form for lengths that they are broken up into one-inch increments. If I were to buy a used set from another 1Iron user who was a 37.9" WTF, would these clubs still be considered to be a proper fit? Sorry to seem persnickety but I want the right fit for taking my game to where it should be taken. Thanks!

OK, so I think I've decided to take the plunge, order one of your gap wedges, and if it really feels right to me then try the whole set (I can return it in 30 days if I don't like it, so why not?) I'm getting a little bit of ambiguity in my W-T-F measurement, though...depending on pretty subtle changes in how I stand I can go from the 34-inch range to the 35-inch range. Recommendations?

One thing I haven't seen posted are reviews of the 1 Iron #7 wood. In my opinion it's the best utility or trouble club I've ever hit.
I took it to the range and had my friends hit it to compare to their hybrids (Callaway, Nickent, and the club pro's Bobby Jones hybrid). Everyone of them fell in love with the 1 Iron #7 wood from the very first shot and the club pro placed an order for one that very night.
For me it's a 180 yard club from the fairway and from the cabbage it cuts through everything and gets the ball up and out quickly. I've hit this club hundreds of times and I've never had a miss-hit.

- 3 wood experience -- Ken, 19:01:08 01/28/08 Mon
I hesitate to ask this now because it is winter in Ohio and I won't be able to practice, but at least we can talk golf. I received my 1 Irons in July and played thru September. I really like the clubs, and being a Single Plane swinger anyway, the one position setup was an easy switch. My former fairway woods were Toski Tough Shot, and I hit them all pretty well, so I had no trepidation about hitting the 1 Iron woods. On the first day at the range, going thru the irons with 1/4 swings then to the woods, the 7w and 5w were as expected, but the 3w was a disaster. It would not get airborne very well or with any pop. I continued to go thru the clubs again with the 1/2 swing and the same thing with the 3w. As I started playing rounds, still, the 3w just was not giving good results. I hit a few good ones, but not many. The 5w and 7w are just great. Any similar experiences and suggestions? I play to a 7.4 index, so can pretty much move the ball - which is why I am so baffled with the 3w.

I ordered a set of the used/demo woods and irons combo early last week and they were delivered in 3 days - WOW!! Other than a slight brush mark on one or two of the soles of the clubheads these babies look brand new. I've been to the range twice now and these clubs perform way beyond my expectations - accurate, consistent, long. After what I've seen I can't believe that all the golf companies haven't gone to this system of single length clubs and I sure can't understand why all golfers aren't playing them.
BTW - customer service is beyond excellent.

- Swing Weight of the Irons -- Bob Hill (Questioning/Information Seeking), 04:20:36 01/13/08 Sun
Hello David,
I'm an avid follower of your club theory, but am concerned about the weight of them since swinging a club weighted to 1-Iron club specifications. The heavier club stays on line better, but I play a Ping-Eye copy (15 yearsl old), and am accustomed to the lighter clubhead in my transition at the top of the swing. The heavier club accentuates a longer pause at the top -the ryhthm of which I could probably get used to - though I don't particulary care to change my swing to accommodate the single-length club. My clubs are maybe a C-9 weight, and the 1-Irons feel like a D-3 or D-4.
Any chance of you selling a lighter weight iron..?? I'm especially concerned with introducing them to my girlfriend. She swings and even lighter club.

I love the 1Irons!!! Best clubs ever. Had my set (Steel Driver, 3W, 5W, 3-LW including GW) for almost a year now and I'm still in love! The hardest thing for me is choosing which club not to keep in the bag as I own 14 of yours. I also occasionally experience glare when chipping with my lob wedge. Not sure if anyone has asked about this, but have you considered making a set of wedges with a glare resistant finish? That would be really cool. Thanks so much for your swing tips and for such an awesome product. I still owe you a full review. It's coming this spring.

- New 1 Irons -- Stan, 15:26:41 12/17/07 Mon
Mr. Lake:
My new 1 Irons were delivered last week and I've had the chance to play two rounds with them. I got the combo woods/irons set plus the #3 wood, driver, and all three wedges. They are beautiful clubs that the pictures on your website don't do justice. Clean look and minimal offset.
I had some concerns when I ordered them about the shaft flex since your company does'nt go by standard flex ratings but they feel perfect to me. I've never played any club that felt more balanced and powerful in my hands and during my swing.
My first two rounds that I mentioned equalled my best rounds this whole summer so I'm impressed right off the bat. All of the clubs hit farther than my old set and I can really lace the ball straight down the center of the fairway off the tee with the driver. The irons are great but you should promote the fairway woods more because they are easier to hit than my old Adams hybrids and hit the ball long.
Thanks,
Stan

Dear Mr. Lake,
I have always wanted to try single length clubs, as your theory makes sense to me. However, I have always been unable to as my parents remain skeptical and just will not allow me to (at 17 :( ) try the clubs even with your money back guarantee (don't ask me). As such I have been looking for anyone demoing single length clubs over here in New Zealand, but to no avail. Over the Christmas and New Years my family and I will be travelling to Las Vegas and was wondering if you have any clubs for demo over there. I know it is probably doubtful as your website lists only 2 demo locations, but I thought I might as well ask as this will probably be the best opportunity for me to try a set ever. With Christmas around the bend, a good demo is probably all they need to be convinced into buying me a set :).
Thanks,

Mr. Lake,
After reading your 1 Iron Golf website over and over for the past three months as well as the three or four pages of archived posts on this forum I took the plunge two weeks ago and bought a set of 1 Irons. When they arrived I was immediately impressed by their looks and craftsmanship. I followed the Playability Tips that were included and spent the first three days at the range getting used to using only one swing and set-up.
Since then I've played four rounds of golf at a course where I normally shoot in the high 80's. My scores for these first four rounds were: 86, 86, 85, and 83. Without a doubt these are the best feeling irons I've ever owned and the shots are high and straight. I'm very confident that my scores will drop considerably over the next few months.
Thank you for an excellent golf system and fantastic golf clubs.
Sincerely,
Jack Constance

- 1-Irons in Australia -- Matt Richter, 23:31:35 12/02/07 Sun
I have left this message for a few weeks on purpose ... I wanted to give the irons a full work-out before I commented on how they feel / play.
Firstly, I bought a set of components from David after looking for a chance to try a single length set of irons for about 10 years ... I got the 3 iron through Lob Wedge.
David was very helpful in his communications, which was a pleasant change from normal retailers who treat you as a fool that they can dupe! Not David - he answered all of my questions sincerely and honestly.
When the iron heads arrived - I was pleasantly surprised. They are a really nice head. I play off a 4 handicap (have been off scratch a long while ago!) and dont generally go for game improvement irons because of the huge offsets ... these irons were clean and simple.
I sat down with my mate (a pro club fitter) and we checked the heads - the lightest was 273 gms, heaviest 277 gms which is very good for components. The lies and lofts were spot on - very impressive.
We then spined the DG S300 shafts and set up the irons to be an exact match to my favourite 8-iron. I used the lie as a base, and then worked off that. We tip weighted the shafts so that the head weights were identical.
We completed the setup with a set of Feel Golf Release Grips (reverse taper).
Onto the golf course. My expectations were - that the wedges would feel strange at such a relatively long length ... but the irons I was most interested in were the 3,4,5 irons.
Of course the club head speed would be slightly lower than the traditional long irons, but the 1-iron club head is heavier so the force difference on the ball is minimal - combined with a more central strike on the blade ... would it work in practice?
The wedges felt strange all right. 15 years of snuggling up to the wedges around the green is hard to get over instantly. Full shots were slightly higher than my old set - but distances were good (nice gaps)
The 3,4,5 irons were excellent. No loss in distance at all, a major improvement in control.
I was considering cutting down the wedges and adding the MOI weight to the head ... but stuck with it for a couple of practice sessions and a couple of rounds. I am glad I didnt change a thing. The advantages of having a single setup - far outweigh any dis-advantage of an extra inch for chipping etc... I actually now find the length helps me stand tall and be aggressive with the pitches / chips.
So over-all result - a great set of clean looking irons that feel great and have already given me more consistancy and confidence. Over the next 3 - 4 months I expect I will grow to love these irons.
One thing I must say is that I do not think that you can determine what length / shaft / lie is suitable for every player on WTF measurement alone.
The shaft you use, its length, the speed of the swing, the dynamic lie all need to be worked out by a professional dynamic fitting.
I used a shaft I knew and a setup I knew, based on head weight and years of playing around with lies etc...
I mean how can the same setup be right for a 70 year old / 20 year old with the same WTF? If I had the same WTF as Tiger ... he would have a much stiffer shaft than I have ... what about toe droop of the shafts etc?
Thats my only point of dis-agreement with David's setup - his irons are first class ... and his service is fantastic.
Cheers and happy golfing.
Matt R

- The right Idea ! -- SWHouston (SWHouston), 10:03:30 12/05/07 Wed
Hello Fellas,
Just found this Forum, and wanted to say hello to all. I sent an EMail to 1 Iron quite a while back, when I first saw their advertisements, supporting their applications of length regulated by Lie, not club number.
I have to admit, that I have been adjusting length of my Clubs, much like 1 Iron does, for quite a few years, and was very surprised to see someone (company), come out with such a “bold” concept. (thought I had that little trick all to myself).
However, I urge all of you not to be very confident about the “Chart” recommendations about length of club.
Before you order a set from 1 Iron, get a competent Golf Equipment Professional, to assist you with that determination, the chart numbers don’t work all that well for me, so, be careful, it’s an investment that you’ll be enjoying for many many years !!
Good luck, and I hope you enjoy this truly logical application for your equipment, as much as I have.
Have a good Day ! :-)

- My first 9 holes -- Eric, 13:02:49 11/11/07 Sun
Okay, I just had my clubs delivered last week and I hit a quick 9 hole par 3 today and I cant say how pleased I am. These irons are the real deal. I beat my best score by 6 strokes on my first time out. On hole 9 (170 yards), I grabbed my 4 iron. I could never hit a 4 for my slice was always 40 yards left (im a lefty). I lined up like my 8 iron, took a slow back swing and drilled the ball over 180. Yes, it was long, but it was straight. I could not believe how easy it was to hit. Its so easy now to grab any iron and use the same line as your regular 8 iron.
Dave, you have made golf fun again. Thank you, sir

Though you may get a kick out of this.
Standing on the tee of a 135 yd Par 3. Pull out my 8 iron and put a nice smooth swing on the ball.
Shot looks good... A little low... Flies straight over the flag, through the trees, over the next fairway, into the side of the canyon.
Here is a tip. Make sure that you put the correct covers back on your irons. Sometime during the round I had put the 8 iron cover on my 4 iron! With single length irons it's not easy to see the difference standing over the ball.

- 1irons work -- Jaacob Bowden, 16:22:30 10/31/07 Wed
Just wanted to give kudos to David Lake and his 1irons. The concept of the irons makes sense and man do they work! In addition, what I read on the forums about his high level of personal commmunication with his customers and potential customers was spot-on.
I'm using David's 3-L right now and shot my first tournament round in the 60s with them. If you are interested in trying them, definitely do so...but make sure to try the whole set and use the full 30-day money-back guarantee. At first I still made the same misses I used to make with my old irons. It took about a month for the inner workings of my brain to "get" that all the clubs were the same...even though I knew it on a conscious level the whole time. The consistency with my iron-play has since noticeably improved, and I still get the same distance gaps as my old clubs.
Also, if you try them and aren't getting the same distance as your old irons, keep in mind the loft differences and the overall weight differences. For example, if your old graphite-shafted PW is listed at 46 degrees but was somehow bent to 45 degrees, of course it could go farther than a steel-shafted 47 degree 1iron PW.
And I know David advocates using only one club for chipping, but for those like myself that like to use different clubs, the 1irons will improve your chipping as well. Each club is the same and the only thing that changes is the height of the shot.

As the golf pro at my club I see and have tested every brand and line of golf club made. A few weeks ago one of my students showed up with a set of 1 Irons from the 1 Iron Golf Company. He explained the concept to me since I wasn't familiar with the company and my first impression was skeptical. He hit some beautiful shots and I became curious so I asked to try them for myself. All I can say is that in my twenty years as a professional golf instructor and club pro I've never hit better irons. Most golfers have no business carrying any iron longer than a #5 iron and I advise them to replace the long irons with hybrids - not with the 1 Irons though!! The #3 and #4 irons are as easy to hit as the #9 iron and the distance and control is phenomenal. I bought a set for myself and am completely sold on the idea and the company. I'm now advising my students to go this route because it flatly works and can improve anybody's ball striking and game.

I received my 1 iron golf clubs four days ago. I have always wondered why my golf clubs were different lenghts and I assumed it was for distance control. After seeing the ad in my golf magazine I decided to try the single lenght clubs. I can not believe how much better I am hitting these clubs. It is taking some adjustment to use the same swing with each club and my distances are not as good as normal. I checked the lofts against my taylormade CGB's and the taylormades are about one club loft stronger across the set so that explained the difference in distance. One thing that is different is I am hitting the fairway much more often than normal. I am however having some trouble ajusting to the LW and the three iron. I am very impressed with the build quality and can not wait to get the woods I just ordered yesterday.

- My results -- John Bair, 19:59:17 10/02/07 Tue
Like most people I never read the instructions when I buy a new product and this is how I approached my new set of 1 Irons when they were delivered. I tried them at the range three times and was convinced they weren't for me and called 1 Iron Golf for a return authorization number.
By chance Mr. Lake answered the phone and we talked for about half an hour. First he explained to me that only having the clubs for four days wasn't nearly enough time to get used to them. Second, he asked me if I had read and followed the Playability Tips that were included with my clubs. When I told him that I hadn't read them I could hear him let out a sigh over the phone. He explained that the Playability Tips were the key to success with single length irons and wasn't surprised at my results since I hadn't read or follwed them. He told me everything I should have read in the Playability Tips and why it was so important to study and follow them to the letter. He took his time with me and really opened my eyes. I told him that I would like to keep the clubs for the full 30 days and really give them an honest try.
After studying the Playability Tips, which are excellent, I went to the range with a much greater understanding of the system and clubs. There was a huge difference between my first few range trips and this one. I hit all of the irons straight and long with a much smoother swing then I thought would work. My next few range trips proved even more impressive because as I became more and more comfortable using the same swing with each club my shots became crisper and had more power. I was smoking the ball with the 3,4,and 5 irons and dropping them like darts while my wedge shots looked like the pros.
This was two months ago and needless to say I didn't return the clubs. My distances have gone up with every club and my scores are lower with each round. It's not very often that somebody invents a better mouse trap but in this case it's true.
I want to thank 1 Iron Golf and Mr. Lake for taking his time with me - the best customer service I have ever seen.

- New Low -- Jimblob, 13:56:41 09/28/07 Fri
I shot a 79 today on a par 70 course. It's the lowest score ever for me. Largely due to my 1iron clubs. The titanium driver is helping me hit second shots from the fairway and I'm usually the longest in my group. Thanks for the help David!

- Best Kept Secret in Golf -- Ralph, 19:26:54 09/17/07 Mon
Did anyone else notice the #3 iron that Tiger used on the 229 yard par 3 on Saturday? Looked kinda short for a #3 iron and kinda familiar didn't it? Now I know why they say that "1 Irons are the best kept secret in golf".

- a week to remember -- ed norman, 17:43:55 09/24/07 Mon
Last tuesday, in our weekly golf scramble, a buddy of mine who owns the golf course got a hole in one on a 201 yard downhill par 3 with a 7 wood. Last saturday our annual golf/fundraiser for our basketball kids teams I got a double eagle, 181 yards from the pin with my 3 iron made by david lake. 10 holes later a 70 year old on our team got a hole in one on a par 3 128 yards into a hard 3 club wind. It was quite an amazing week, I never witnessed a hole in one in my life or have not yet had one myself, my first double eagle though,,,,quite a week,,,ed norman

- Putter shaft length (oh, and kudos too!) -- Tom, 12:58:16 09/20/07 Thu
Hi David. I just wanted to say thank you for these clubs. Due to time constraints, I'm only able to play nine holes at a time, once and sometimes twice a week. I've kept a spreadsheet of my scores and all the course stats since 2004. Since I've been playing 1 irons (two golf seasons now), my scores have dropped an average of seven strokes (that's for nine holes)! And it keeps getting better, which keeps me grinning.
I wanted to ask about putters. I read in another post that you weren't looking to add a putter to your product catalog (unfortunate, but I understand why). My question is what would/should be the club length for the putter, based on a W-T-F measurement of 35.0 inches? Is it the same for a chipper? Or is this one of those personal preference/style issues? Also, are your stepless club shafts for sale? Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

- big reduction in handicap -- ed norman, 16:04:22 09/12/07 Wed
Hi David,
I am pleased to announce that my league handicap for 9 holes this year started out at a 9, then went down to a 5. I pulled a back muscle the last month of league, and could hardly swing a club. My handicap went up to a 6 after that, I drank a lot of Xango, back healed nicely, now I am back to shooting low 40's again high 30's. Your clubs are simply amazing,,,,thanks for a great product

- Driver or Hybrid -- David Black (Holy Crap!), 06:37:20 09/19/07 Wed
Holy Crap! This is amazing! 3 years ago I had these same thoughts. I was referred here by Ken Tannar after I sent him the following questions.
Hi,
I have a 20° Cobra Baffler (stiff flex) that I hit pretty accurately and consistently about 240 off the tee with a nice draw. I also have a R-7 Driver 9.5° stiff flex that I hit anywhere from 235 to 300yds, very inconsistent. I was wondering should I go to maybe a 14 or 16° hybrid and how much more distance I would get.
I've always have had trouble with big headed Drivers, the most success with a driver came with my Confidence starter set it was 260cc's! Then it broke.
I don't understand why I hit my hybrid better and as far as my 15° 3 wood which is probably 2 inches longer!
I hit all my irons long with avg to high trajectory. Examples
LW 60° = 100yds
SW 56° — 120 yds
PW — 145 yds (all 3 wedges are the same lenght!)
6i - 185 yds
5i - 200 yds (yardages were measured using a SkyCaddie GPS)
Shouldn't I be able to hit close to 300 yards off the tee with something?
Please advise. Thank you very much.
