- Compare apples to apples -- David Lake, 19:15:40 08/07/09 Fri
There is no standardization in the golf industry as to loft angles. This means that one manufacturer's #7 iron might be the equivalent of another manufacturer's #6 or #5 iron. Many golf club manufacturers will make their irons with "strong" loft angles in order to give the illusion that their golf clubs produce increased distance. You have heard golfers say it a thousand times: "I can hit this #8 iron a lot farther then my old #8 iron". The fact is that they can't. What they can do is hit an 8 iron with a 35º loft angle farther than an 8 iron with a 39º loft angle. When we speak of distance increases using 1 Iron Golf clubs we are referring to the increases you will get as a result of consistent solid ball contact coupled with the dynamics of clubhead design and shaft optimization. Typically, our customers will hit our 39º loft angle iron farther than their old 39º loft angle iron for exactly these reasons. You cannot compare one manufacturer's numbered iron with that of another manufacturer; you have to compare loft angles. It just comes down to a comparison of apples to apples.

I have had a few sessions since I got the new set with the 3 iron as in the playability tips and I have to say its pretty ordinary. Not getting much distance or contact and confidence is pretty low. I know its probably my swing but I could use some tips.
I took the 3 wood with me today to try it for the first time and that was really good both off a tee and off the turf.

- having trouble with woods -- Han, 11:31:09 11/16/09 Mon
Hi all, after several months with the woods, i've yet to develop any consistency. I feel like I'm making solid, good sounding contact. A nice "TING" sound, but about 50% of the time, the ball squirts LOW and runs along the ground for maybe 70-80 yards. It's really frustrating when you know you could have just played a 5 iron from there and gotten tons more yardage.
On the positive side, I've never been terribly consistent with the woods, so arguably this is an improvement.
Any suggestions?

- Where does the "bad swing" fit in? -- John Trude, 02:26:07 11/16/09 Mon
At 63, and having had a high single figure handicap most of my adult life, I confess to having a dodgy swing. Basically, like many, an over the top swing I just can't correct in spite of hours and hours on the practice tee. Divots pointing twenty degrees to the left and I can stand with a pro for hours and he can't make me change. The theory I understand; I have tried 1 plane , 2 plane; I even took up flying; there just had to be another plane. Just can't get the club into the zone. So, I'm due for a club upgrade; why should I consider something so radical when I can't even correct my swing. I'm assuming I'll finish up with something like a matched set of 6 irons. Well I slice my 6 irons; I don't slice my wedges - too much. So tell me please, what can a set of clubs like this do for someone who after years of playing golf three times a week, still can't get the feeling of swinging in to out.

I haven't seen it mentioned but the consistent 'lie' on all sticks, gives a greater variation as to which club you use for the 'bump and run' type shots- I've even used the 3 iron, which I'd never do with a conventional set. Everything about these clubs just boost my confidence.

- The Adventure Continues -- Carlos Tomas (Back to Square One), 08:21:31 11/14/09 Sat
I tried to find my original thread "The Adventure Begins", but it seems to have disappeared. I even tried the search feature, but the thread was nowhere to be found. Even a "manual" search of the archives failed to turn it up. So I'll begin a new thread.
In short, I've decided to invent my own swing. After years of taking lessons, buying almost every golf gadget imaginable, with a garage full of clubs and devices, and never improving one iota, I figured I have nothing to lose by just trying to figure things out for myself and forgetting everything I've ever learned. The only connection with the past I'm keeping are my 1 Iron Golf clubs, 3-PW, GW, SW, LW, 3-wood, and driver.
I played 9 holes a week ago with a woman whose swing was unlike anything I've ever seen. She swayed around and the clubhead seemed to fly all over the place, but she always made solid contact with the ball, and it always went straight. "Go with what works," she said. "Who cares what it looks like? Results are what counts." I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea.
So with all that in mind this last week I went to the driving range every day and experimented to see if I could find anything to help me develop the consistency missing so far from my game. I experimented with ball position, forward and back, near and further away. I tried different arm positions, swing paths, feet widths. You name it, I tried it. And yesterday it all started to come together.
My new swing feels very different than anything I've felt before. And I'm finding I can duplicate the feeling, and the results, swing after swing. It's not perfected yet, but I'm striking the ball well and getting shots that are straight, or mostly so. Way straighter than in the past. And when I see shots going in the desired direction, as David has said before it gives me confidence.
One thing is for sure, the 1 Iron Golf clubs, when struck solidly, have a feel unlike any other club I've ever used. I'm sticking with them, even though I've more or less thrown the swing tips out the window.

- Received my new clubs -- Alex, 09:15:10 11/09/09 Mon
Today i got my new "used/demo" set. I was that much impressed when i checked my clubs and they all look BRAND NEW !! After work i went straight to the range with my #3 iron as recommended. I topped the first 15 or 20 balls straight out but then i hit a great shot - incredible far (never hit a #3 before only #5 iron from my old set) since my #9 was the only iron i hit almost 90% very consistent i never used another iron on the course (of cause i hit woods and wedges but no irons from 3-8)
After a full bag of rangeballs (40) hit very solid with my new #3 i called a friend and he came to our home course for a short 9 hole round. ( i know i should not play until several range sessions but i was feeling like playing a round would lead to more success.)
i left my woods and driver in my car and only took my new irons and a putter out on the course. it was amazing!! i played incredible, never had a better round in my life! (i know that i'm still a bad player but since i started golf 6 months ago, this round would have impressed you also :D ) my friend harry didnt believe i was playing with him..
i still have a lot of work on my chipping/putting but since i didnt miss 3-4 strokes each hole like i used to my score dropped like crazy :)
thanks a lot David for your phenomenal clubs! i will post further progress soon.

- 1iron results -- K. W. (3rd times the charm), 17:33:18 11/11/09 Wed
This is my 3rd time to own a set of 1 irons. Due to no fault of the previous 1irons, I chose to go another direction. This time, I have really stayed with the program as suggested by David. I am getting very satisfactory results this time even with the the 3 iron which I found impossible before.
As a note of interest, I tried to hit my old fairway woods and regular length driver after honing the 1rons and found it impossible due to my new swing. Fortunately, I also have a Perfect driver which is 42 inches and a set of nike CPR hydrids which are also much shorter. By playing these clubs with my new swing and ball position, my game came together nicely.
It certainly makes me think that the 1iron 3 wood and driver would be even better for me. Hopefully, I would be able to obtain more distance than I am with the Perfect Club driver and Nike CPRs.
Has anyone else had the experience of having touble with your old driver and fairway woods after being introduced to the 1iron swing?

- impressive increase in distance and divot question -- Han, 07:03:08 11/09/09 Mon
Hi all,
I've been using 1 irons for about 5 months or so and have had mixed results, but mostly good. I'm a 10.5 at my home course, a fairly easy muni.
anyway, starting about a couple weeks ago, i started getting some really scary improvements in distance. I say scary because I was flying over greens with clubs I thought I'd be short with. For example, yesterday, I shot the best round this year I've had, a 78. I hit GW to an elevated pin from 142 and was about pin high, another SW to an elevated pin 135 away and was about 4 yards short. Overall, I'd say I'm at least one club longer but sometimes two! If i didn't start with a triple bogey on the first hole, I could have broke my personal record.
One consequence of my change is that I'm getting back to a divot in front of the ball. It's not a big piece of sod, but probably about 4 inches long and not terribly deep. But in David's swing tips, he recommends a burn mark. I've never really been able to reproduce the burn mark that he talks about, but anyway I'm wondering if anyone out there has had the same thing happen. Is that non-divot thing critical?

Played 9 holes on Thursday and very satisfied with my Irons, my 3 iron length jumped out to about 180 yards. did have some trouble with my sand and lob wedge, but that just needs practice. I only used my irons and a putter. Left my woods and driver at home. This the best set of irons I've ever owned. They play great.

Hit a few shots with 3 iron like David says. First 20 or so were pretty good considering I had not hit a 3 iron for years up to 170 against a wind. Hit some balls in the morning and again in the afternoon and one thing I did notice that I did not have a sore back which would happen normally if I was using my conventional clubs.

- How to take the grip and what is the best grip -- Jeff Pasierb (Help), 22:09:34 11/02/09 Mon
Ordered clubs on Monday night and received on Saturday day. Upon inspection all I can say is very impressive. I immediately read David's book and re-read the playability instructions. Then on Sunday I re-read both again. After practicing the set-up,posture,and swing on both Saturday and Sunday, I decided it was time to take the 3iron to the range. I hit about fifty balls with different lengths of swings and rest and analyzation in between. The contact was very crisp but straight shots mixed with quiet of few hooks/pulls. I went back today with the same approach and results. I was trying different grips and grip positions. Before I go further I need to know how to take grip and what the best grip would be? Do you take it out in front of oneself or with club on ground behind ball or down at ones left side? I figured out taking my grip was closing my clubface. One other thing in reality would my distance from ball be the exact same with every iron? I believe so and how far are the hands from ones body in the set-up?

I came across the 1iron website on October 11 whilst on another site and clicked into it and read a lot of the information. It seemed to make sense so I sent emails to David Lake who answered all my questions. I placed an order on October 28 for used demo irons and a 3 wood with the free freight deal that was running at the time. I find the prices of the clubs fairly reasonable compared to the brand name gear which can be quite expensive in Australia. I am due to get the clubs in 3 days time which is trackable through Fedex.
The service has been really good, all my emails being replied to the same or next day.
I have had a variety of golf clubs over the years and not found the consistency that you need in golf.
I will post progress when I get the clubs.

- First round with 1-irons -- Martin, 10:35:29 11/01/09 Sun
Hello everyone
I just purchased the 3-lw set and a driver. I got them Tuesday, and went straight to the range with my 3 iron. What a disappointment, I could not hit it straight or far. Went back Wednesday with the same result. But then Friday I started to hit some straight long balls. Not every shot but sertenly a big improvement ( it was a matter of finding the right distance to the ball).
Today I played my first round (I know it's to soon ). I did not make a great score but that was due to my chipping and putting, not the 1-irons. I had so many great iron shots from fairway. I used my 3 iron 3 times, and every time the ball flew about 200 meters (218 yards) and straight. One of the shots was a bunker shot, I landed on the green. I will go to the range this winter and get real comfortable with my new irons. Cant wait till spring. I know I will lower my HCP then.
Thanks for a great product.

- "1-wood" -- David, 10:12:43 10/27/09 Tue
I recently purchased the 3-LW set of irons and I have to say I am very pleased with them. The whole idea of irons with the same characteristics is something I have always thought would work.
My next purchase (in the spring) will be woods for my set. I will be getting the 3-wood and possibly 5-wood (depending on my success with the 3 iron).
I have been looking at some of the threads regarding the old steel driver and I had some questions about it. How long is it and is it built to the same specs as the other woods but with a stronger loft angle?
I understand that they are not available for purchase but if, as I understand, the steel driver is built to the "wood" specs then I would purchase one should David be so kind as to make them available again.

On page 42 of the 1 Iron golf book it says that the shaft should be pointing straight down from your belly button
to the back of the golf ball. If that is the case isn't
the ball just slightly forward of center? If not then the
hands would have to be slightly ahead of the ball at address causing a slight forward press.

Hello everyone, just like me it took me a bit to get used to the 1iron system, David tells you the truth now its up to you to decide what to with it. Just how ironic it is, there was a question about sport specific fitness for golf? David answered with there is no such thing just do a full body work out, Well was doing the golf fitness thing for a few months this year and gained some flexibilty but not much gain, Just went to a full body work out like David says and the gains were so much better, My swing was a bit tighter and had plenty more power, than when I was doing the stretching way too much, Good call David.

I just received my 1 Iron Golf Clubs. Although I have not taken them to the range yet I am already feeling confident with them. The club heads are quite nice and have the look of durable quality steel. The face and top line are very nice (I typically play blades. My biggest and most pleasant surprise is the club length. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall with a W-T-F of 34 3/4 inches. My irons are as long as a standard 9 iron. I can hit my 9 iron solid all day long. I also received a 3 wood that is a little shorter than a standard 7 wood. I love the size and shape of the head (it reminds me a bit of a Callaway Hawk Eye VFT from the top. The Driver is about 43 inches and simple but it has a deep face so I feel I can bomb it. The grips are a different style and look than I am used to but they feel as if I have a very secure grip on them and at the same time they won't tear my hands up. I will up date you all after a session or 2.

Hey guys, i found the 1 irongolf site few months ago and since i started playing golf this year (april) i am still on a -45 HCP having big trouble hitting my "starterset" irons. ok i know they are very crapy but im a student and i dont have so much money to spent. im hitting my 9 iron pretty good about 115 yards (105 meters) and very straight. my wedges also work pretty well PW, SW, LW but if i try to hit any other iron its almost funny to watch me since i never get any of those straight.. i did a lot of practice on my short game cause its fun to see how easy things work with irons i can control.
my biggest poblem is reaching the greens in time.. its hard to play from tee to green with a 9 iron and still score points.. my pro told me not to buy a driver yet so i got myselfe a 3 wood with a light shaft cause of my slow swingspeed and i started to hit good teeshots then.
i guess everyone got my problem now, i want to improve my game and thats why im thinking of 1iron golf.. do you think this irons would work for me? maybe a little feedback could help make a decision ordering here.

An email that we received:
Dear David
An informative newsletter (SwingTips XVIII), as I had been puzzling as to why your wedges have been giving me such tighter results than my previous ones, and an unprecedented success ratio from bunkers.
I have had the 1-Iron clubs for twelve weeks now and I like EVERYTHING about them. I have never hit such consistent, straight and ever lengthening drives. My fairway-wood play is totally transformed. Iron play improves week by week. The percentage of pars and now even birdies continues to rise. I am successfully playing shots that I would not
have dared before.
Of course I am still, frustratingly, having about three wipe-out or triple bogey holes per round wrecking my totals due to false muscle-memory lapses. However I am gradually clearing out the old instructional clutter and accept that it is still early days with much work still to be done. I have even just bought an electric trolley to ease the back-troubles.
So I am really enjoying using the 1-Iron clubs, making such visible progress and looking forward eagerly to each round. All thanks to you Mr. Lake and your exemplary company.
Sincerely,
Ed H.

I have been useing your 1-iron combo for a couple of years now with steady progress, I have been improveing so well that my brother is keen to give them a go, but here is where the problem starts, he is left handed and I am right handed so he cant give them a try, he does'nt play very often, and will only use his irons because he cannot hit any sort of wood well, he likes both woods and irons and thinks they could make him improve, but I have told him you dont do left handed woods, so how does he get round this problem, if he has to get woods from somewhere else, surely the concept of WTF goes out the window, he will have to use two swings, one for the 1irons and then another for the woods, do you have any suggestions on the best way to proceed with this. - First 2 weeks -- Louis, 11:33:41 10/12/09 Mon
I received my clubs about 2 weeks ago and thought I would share my experiences since then. Before purchasing the clubs, I was on this forum reviewing everyones experiences for almost a month before taking the plunge. So, hopefully, this posting will help someone who is also considering the 1 iron clubs.
As I already emailed to David, I was immediately impressed with the quality and finish of the clubs, and I absolutely love the grips.
My first time out I followed the "tips" and went with the 3 iron. Because I anticipated a length of a "conventional" 8 iron based on WTF my measurements, I had been exclusively hitting my old 8 iron for about 2 weeks before receiving the new clubs. My new clubs were just about the same length (a little less). The swing transition was easy but it took about a bucket of balls before I started to see my 3 iron fly around 185 yards in a very consistent direction. It was wonderful to be hitting my 3 iron so consistently with good distance. After a time (different practice session), I moved to the other clubs with the same consistency and yardage, and eventually brought out the driver. Again, after a bucket of balls, I was hitting consistently around 250 yards and STRAIGHT! This was about my same yardage with my old driver.
Yesterday I was again at the range and now started to feel like I could pick up the swing speed a bit. For the first time, I hit my driver and landed the ball just short of the far fence on 2 bounces. The fence is 300 yards away! Overall, this was by far the best practice session that I have ever hit with my driver.
I also hit my 4, 5, 6, and 7 irons and felt incredibly confident with every swing. Not having to adjust the "swing plane" and set-up for every iron, especially going from one extreme (3 iron) to another (PW), is amazing.
I am taking David's advice and waiting another 2 weeks to become completely comfortable with the clubs before playing a round. But so far, I have to say that I am completely delighted with the clubs. I also purchased the wedges and 3 and 5 woods. They also feel very comfortable to swing...and CONSISTENT!
I hope this helps anyone who may be considering a purchase. I will continue to post any new revelations and results of my first rounds of play.
I am one happy golfer! Both with the clubs and the great customer service.

- My experience -- Roger, 07:48:48 09/13/09 Sun
I first ran across the 1 Iron Golf website last November and have visited it regularly ever since. I didn't pull the trigger on a set of clubs until last month and I got the used-demo full set of irons plus a #3 wood and driver.
I followed the Playability-Tips that came with my clubs to the letter and took four trips to the driving range before playing a round of golf. As David Lake states in the Tips it takes a few of these range trips to get used to using the same swing and set-up with every club and at first I lost some distance like he said you would initially. By the third trip to the range I was starting to really get the feel and timing down for these clubs and had gained back my old distances plus a few extra yards. The biggest change I noticed was that I wasn't miss-hitting any of my shots where I could always expect about 20% miss-hits with my old long irons. By my fourth range trip I was hitting the shots of my life - high, long, and straight.
My first round of golf was an eye-opener as I was nailing my shots straight at the pin but was hitting the ball too far. I went down one club on all my approach shots and everything dialed in. I ended up matching my best round of 77, something I haven't been able to come close to for a number of years.
I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about my new golf game and my 1 Irons. I can only say thank you Mr. Lake and 1 Iron Golf.

I'd been perusing the 1 Iron GOlf website for 3 months and decided these were the clubs for me. The only obstacle was the shipping ($120USD) and customs/taxes to ship to New Zealand. I emailed Mr. Lake to inquire on this point and he told me that regardless if I bought a brand name set of golf clubs in New Zealand at a local golf store or ordered them directly from the USA I would still be charged the same shipping and duties. The only difference was that the local store would bury these costs in the sales price. Not fully believing this I priced a set of Callaway X-22 irons at three locations in New Zealand with the lowest price being $1,010 in USD. I also priced the same set in a number of golf outlets in the USA and the price was $700 USD. The golf stores in New Zealand were charging $310 USD more than the US stores do so Mr. Lake was more than correct on this point.
I ordered the Used/Demo complete set of 1 Irons plus the driver and received them in practically brand new condition. Of course I didn't read through the Playability Tips that came with my order but headed straight for the range. The clubs look and feel great but I didn't burn up the range on my initial outing. Afterwords I studied the Tips thoroughly and the next day went back to the range. This time things were better but I knew from the Tips that it would take a few trips to the practice range to really get my timing down plus get used to using the same swing and a center ball position with each club.
To make a long story short, after five range trips with no round of golf in-between everything began to fall into place. On the sixth trip it was like somebody flipped on the light switch and I was hitting the best shots of my life by far with every club. I am amazed how high I hit the #3 iron and still get 200 yards carry. A guy next to me at the range thought I was crushing a #5 iron based on the trajectory and when I showed him it was a #3 his jaw hit the ground. He hit a few shots with it and was in disbelief at his distance and shot height. He told me that he couldn't hit a regular #3 iron to save his life (btw - you'll be receiving his order shortly).
I want to thank you for a great product and fantastic customer service.

I am a reasonable 6 hc ,playing once or twice a week for the last 8 yrs.I am 52 ,and on good days shoot below my hc,even getting level par rounds on a couple of occasions. On bad days I can shoot up to high 80's...how I hate those days !!! like everyone else I am looking for consistency....which is why Iam drawn to the 1 iron concept.I would love to hear from other single figure golfers who have taken the plunge into 1 iron golf clubs and how things worked out.The clubs themselves look a little 'clunky' and cheap, and the graphics don't look that slick... can anyone reassure me as to quality and looks ( important to me !! ) Many thanks

Okay,After several months of reading reviews about one iron golf , and speaking with David I am ordering a set of irons. The concept sounds good but am still a little sceptical that these irons are going to perform. I have spent a small fortune on game improvement clubs.Talormade,Nike,Cleveland,Titleist, and yes even mizuno.I also have taken lessons, and spend a fair amount of time on the range. My problem is distance gaps between my irons, and the ability to hit long irons consistantly. So ,I hope these clubs are all there supposed to be,so that i will not be disapointed once again.I will keep updating my exsperience once my clubs are here.

Just wanted to let everyone know about some fun I had with my buddy today. He just bought the Taylormade R9 adjustable driver for about $400. He was all proud and showing it off to everyone. I then proceeded to knock it about 15 yards past him all day long, using my 1iron driver. I also hit all but 2 fairways, and those weren't by much. Accuracy is more important than distance, but having both is awesome. By the way, I am 5'7'', 160lbs, 37 years old. My buddy is 6'1", 205lbs, and 30 years old. I wish you could see his face. As I always say, buy the clubs, they will change your game!

Also, what shaft length would a wood and a driver be for this WTF?
Finally, do you have any plans to produce hybrids? I would prefer them to woods, as I like the shorter shafts

David,
About 2 weeks ago, I asked you about trimming my clubs because my wife incorrectly measured my WTF. Well, I ordered new grips, trimmed them how you told me, and went out and fired a personal best 77 this morning. Every shot was right on target, and I could set up with the ball further back like I wanted to. I have been playing golf for 25 years, the last 1 with 1irons, and I have never played so well as today. Thank you for all your help, you are a golf guru and a hall of famer in my book. I hope you get some recognition for the help you have given the average joe. I turn 37 on Monday, and thanks to 1iron golf, I have many years of good golf ahead of me.
Again, if any of you are considering buying the clubs, do it. Then go to the range, do the work, and start enjoying the game and taking your buddies' money.

- Can't buy a game -- Hal, 12:29:44 07/29/09 Wed
I'm you're typical "buy a game" kind of guy and over the past ten years I've owned sets of Callaways, Pings, Nike, and Titliest golf clubs with no improvement in my game from set to set. About a year ago I ran across the 1 Iron Golf website and became convinced that to improve my level of play I had to eliminate as many of the variables as possible and work on one swing. At first I bought the Wood/Iron combo set plus the driver but within a month I owned every club that 1 Iron Golf sells.
I spent the first couple of weeks at the range alternating between iron days, fairway wood days, and driver days. Once I got used to the feel of the clubs and replaced all my old bad habits with the 1 Iron Golf swing instruction I started hitting the ball better than I ever thought I could do. Crisp clean ball striking with every iron and wood and 5 to 10 yards farther than I ever hit any golf clubs. I literally kill the driver.
One year ago I was shooting in the mid 90's and today I'm shooting consistently in the mid 70's with an occasional high 60's round. I owe all of this to practice and my 1 Irons. Even though I'll go on record as stating that the 1 Irons are the best clubs ever made and I'll never go back to regular clubs again, you still have to devote time to practice. If you're not willing to do this then take up another sport because I'm living proof that you can't just go out and buy a game.

- Out come of a golf outing -- Lyman (Love these clubs), 05:57:47 08/02/09 Sun
I played a round of golf yesterday. First nine was not so good (46). Very first hole was water and I sailed it in the drink. It was not the clubs fault. It was me all the way. Back nine I shot (41). I would have shot a 39 if I hadn't put another one in the water. Not a fault of the 1 iron. It was my fault again. I can see that after a little more practice chipping that I will be shooting scores in the High 70s. Not bad for a 60 year old.
By the way - side not. I was playing with my wife. She is about my hight. I had her hit the 5 iron, because that's the only club she likes in her old set. Guess what - she drilled it. After she hit the 5 a couple of more times I handed her the 3 iron (I didn't tell her that it was a 3 iron). You guessed it. She drilled it to. Now she is hooked on the 1 irons.

Got my new 1-irons yesterday: 3I - LW. Clubs look and feel great and the grips are super. Took them to the range for the first time today and started drilling them from the start. Long, long, long, and straight down the pike. I hit all the irons and gained distance on every one over my old set. 3I carries about 200 yards high in the air and lands soft with little roll. I've got to adjust to the longer distances before I play my first round but I'm expecting some great things from these clubs. I got Mr. Lake's book a few weeks back and have been practicing a single swing with center of stance ball position in my backyard every night to get the hang of it. Because of this the transition was smooth as silk when I got the new clubs.

In the for-what-it’s-worth department I bought the 5-PW, 3W, 5W and 7W combo and moved over to the 1 Iron system using that set. Nearly every golfer I know says they can't hit the 3 and 4 irons, and I was no exception. However, 11 months later I got up the nerve to order the 3 and 4 irons. I couldn’t have been more surprised.
All the comments in the forum about 3 and 4 iron difficulties just didn't happen to me. What I think happened is by the time I had the new clubs in my hands I was already a true-blue 1 Iron guy, and there was absolutely no temptation to over-swing. Every hit is low and long using that nice easy tempo; just like I do with the 5 – PW.
Perhaps others can benefit by totally ignoring the 3 iron until they get everything down. In my case it took the better part of a year. After that it’s just make that same ‘ol swing that works with every other club.
I couldn’t be more pleased with my clubs and my new favorite club is my 3 iron. I have said to countless playing partners – I wouldn’t trade these clubs for any make or model on the market. And, I have a pass to the Nike store in Beaverton (very tough to arrange.) I may use Nike balls, but 1 Irons are superior to any clubs they sell. Perhaps I’ll tell Tiger the next time I see him.

I just got the demo set and a 5W, and unwrapped them, after which I hit a few balls into the net in my back yard.
first impressions, the demo clubs are super clean. very little evidence of any use. They seem shorter than I thought they'd be.
I have been 'preparing' to buy these for a while and have somewhat adapted to a fixed middle ball position for every iron shot with my old clubs along with the thought to try to hit each with the same-ish swing. So right off the bat the ball seemed to be very solidly struck.
even though I set up with the ball out at the toe of the club, the ball marks seem to be very close to the hosel. not sure what that means, but hopefully it's not going to lead to shanks.
I'm going to the range after work. will post my results!

I got my 1 irons three weeks ago (#3 iron through the Lob Wedge). The first few trips to the range were nothing exciting as I could hit the #7 through the wedges fine but had difficulty with the #3 iron through the #6. I was starting to become frustrated and re-read through the playability tips that came with my clubs as well as all of the past newsletters that are available through the website. All I can say is WOW!! If anyone is experiencing trouble with these clubs then you're not following Mr. Lake's instructions precisely. If you read them thoroughly and apply them to your swing you'll be shooting lights out golf.
My #3 and #4 irons are a dream to hit - long and straight with a high trajectory. I haven't seen a fat or thin shot in over a week and all shots feel as smooth as butter coming off the face of the club. Thank you Mr. Lake and 1 Iron Golf for a great set of clubs.

I ordered a full set of irons (3-LW) from 1-Iron two weeks ago and have not got my FedEx email yet. I had hoped I might get lucky and it wouldn't take the 12 business days the 1-Iron website says it will take to build my clubs! I am sure it will be worth the wait.
I am a very tall golfer and those of you out there like myself know how hard that makes consistent swings on your short irons when your bent over so much just to ground the club. I plan on posting my progress with these clubs on this forum much like some other 1-Iron golfers have over the years.
One of the things I hadn't thought of before was the taking of divots on short irons. Like most decent golfers I have always been taught to strike down on the ball with short irons and wedges taking a divot in front of the ball. Since all swings with 1-Iron clubs should be the same will divots come with every club or will they stop altogether? None of my teachers ever actually explained why I should be striking down on the ball; I always assumed it was simply to be able to hit the ball first in the fairway and to avoid as much grass as possible when hitting out of the rough. I would appreciate hearing from any low handicap 1-Iron users about this subject (are you still taking divots?) and of course from you David.

- Thank you David -- Todd, 08:24:12 07/08/09 Wed
David,
I wanted to thank you for making golf enjoyable again. I'm 41 years old and been golfing for 32 years. In that time I've developed some pretty bad habits that have been difficult to overcome.
I received my 1 Iron set last June and spent a lot of time on the range with them last summer. By the end of the golf season up here in the tundra I was hitting them ok but not real well. I was still short on my irons compared to my old set. This spring things started to come around and now in the last month and a half all I can say is WOW! I'm now hitting the ball consistently and I've gained 10 yards on every iron. The best part is I've never been able to hit any club above a 5 iron, now I can hit the 3 or 4 iron as easily as my PW.
I think the best kept secret is your Driver. I've always been able to hit the Driver long just not anywhere close to straight. I've spent a small fortune on Drivers in the past buying into all of the hype about how they'll help me hit the ball straight. None of them ever did. It did take some time getting used to hitting the Driver from the center of my stance but once I did, again WOW! It makes a huge difference playing your second shot from the middle of the fairway with a short iron instead of punching out from behind a tree.
David, once more thank you for helping to bring enjoyment back to golf for me.
Todd

Not only are they great looking but they are an inexpensive way to protect the club-heads from getting dinged up from banging around in your golf bag. They also protect the longer shafts of fairway woods and drivers from the nicks caused by iron club-head impact.

- several questions -- Brooks, 09:42:48 06/16/09 Tue
Mr Lake, I can honestly say I have never had a full set of clubs that felt like they were a good fit and I am on my 5th set of clubs (I have been playing around 10 years). I am 6'8" tall with a WTF of 40.5 inches. I have always felt like I had to bend over at the waist way too much (except perhaps on a 2 or 3 iron) to properly ground the club at setup and make a comfortable swing. I have been to 4 supposed professionals to be fitted and everyone of them has come up with slightly different recommendations. My current set is plus 1.5 inches with a standard lie on all my irons. I just recently went to a Callaway demo day to get fitted and they said my clubs needed to be plus 2 inches and bent 3 degrees upright. That is probably true as my divots tend to be a little deeper at the toe of the club but it just seems to me that I will still have the same problem of having to bend over too much on my short irons. It seems like for a tall person like myself all fitters want to base your entire fitting on the maximum length they can build a club (the 3 iron) that hardly anyone even uses anymore just so they can maintain the half inch gap in length between clubs. Will the 1iron method of fitting help me with my hunched over golf?
Also how do you determine what flex shaft a person gets when ordering a set of clubs. I have a swing speed in the high 90's on my driver and used to use a Taylormade 580 with a stiff flex shaft. After being told by the local "experts" that any speed lower than 100 should use a regular flex shaft I switched to a Ping G2 with a regular flex and promptly lost 25 yards on the average drive. Needless to say I have about had it with the conventional wisdom. I have no illusions about ever being able to hammer 300 yard drives or being a scratch golfer (I am a 15 handicap), I only want my clubs to allow me to be more consistent in my ball striking and I can take it from there.
Can you help me?

- First Impressions -- Kjell, 01:49:08 05/09/09 Sat
So the new set LW-3 + 3W arrived today. And what do you know, I got off early from work and headed straight to the range. It took a long time to unpack the new clubs since they are wrapped in plastic and bubble stuff.
First I looked at the head shape and grooves. I liked that 2 groves are painted white for viewing purposes. The clubs has a sturdy and finished look, however, the black paint didn't seem as "clean" as I have seen in other clubs. Minor. The grips, although oversided is not my first preference, are very tacky and comfortable. The 1iron logo right in front of my right thumb seemed a bit redundant. I would have opted for a better location, like the grip end. Also the 3 wood has a logo on the crown, seemingly for setup position of the center of the club. I would have opted for a dot or some other symbol which is not "wordy"
The feel of the waggle of the clubs is nothing less than superb. It really feels like the same club in my hands. but the ball just travels differently. It was really windy at the range so it was hard to really judge good distances. What was apparent was the trajectories, which seemed right on. What an amazing feeling to hit the 3 iron. Much more control. Although conditions were not right for judging true distances, the feel alone of hitting the 3 iron with a boring flight path, was enough for me.
Tnen I decided to move to the 3 wood. The shorter length felt very comfortable, and delivered better control. However it did seem considerable less in distance. So I hit my 2007 Taylormade burner 5 wood around the same distance, but not as consistantly. I have to move the ball a bit more forward to make proper contact with the 5 wood. Trying to hit the 3 wood harder just yielded less control. So I guess there may be some technique involved in increasing swing speed with this club, while simultaneously keeping the level of control.
Then it was off to the pitching green. I had read about some other forumster's concerns that the wedges would seem longer. I felt no difference. In fact, it seemed more natural to have the "same" club again. I tried some short pitches in the middle of the stance an was amazed at the backspin I was getting.Playing the ball back, forward, open yielded all of the same technique. Keeping the same "middle of stance" setup and varing the speed of the shot seemes simpler and easier to control.
Chipping with a wedge and an 8 iron also yielded good success. No need for ball back, choking up. It seemed easier to just use a slightly more narrow stance, and just use a "mini" swing that didn't break the wrists to get good control.
Overall i am very satisfied. I cant wait to play a round and put them to the stess test. i regularly play a course which is very tight and hilly with lots of lateral hazards, and requires good accuracy for scoring.
More to come...

I am a 56 year old mid handicapper (82 to 88), hit a three wood between 220 and 250 on avg. I hit the ball HIGH with all my irons. Still get the distance (7 iron between 155 and 165, 3 iron 195 to 205) but I don't want anything that will increase the hight of the ball flight off the irons. I can work the ball either way but tend tend toward a drop fade with the short irons. My current irons are a ping knock off (DynaCraft). The sole is not that big and I have never liked clubs with a wide sole although I don't play enough any more to play blades.
Having said this, do you think your irons would be a fit? You don't go into any detail as to the construction of the iron heads, steel type, groove type, weighting, sole. Can you provide this info?
I am interested if I can reasonably believe the clubs will perform for my type of swing. I am 6 foot and my wtf is 36.5

- Driver vs 3 Wood -- Love2Train, 01:06:47 05/16/09 Sat
David,
I have a question for you. I was hoping you could help me out here. Since learning how to use your clubs I have become very very consistent throughout the bag and hit eveyr single club almost dead straight at will. My problem lies with my woods however and it is not a problem of accuracy but distance. I seem to hit my 3 wood the same distance as my driver. I hit them both very well and very straight with slight draw on both, both same ball position center of stance. Same swing and same distance, and it has perplexed me very much. I have tried so much to try to figure out what I might be doing wrong here. I tried teeing it up higher and lower and playing with ball position but nothing so far has worked. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong here? I am sure the driver should go at least 30 yards further then the 3 wood right? Thanks in advance for your help and I do love your clubs and quality.
