Subject: Fairway Woods

I've had my new clubs for a couple of weeks now and have been able to get to the range with them several times and the course with them a few times. I still love them, and they are bringing the joy back to the game.

I ordered the set with the 5 and 7 fairway woods and 5 through PW because I do have a slower swing speed. I am hitting the irons and 7 wood well, but I'm really struggling with the 5 wood. I end up hitting the 7 wood well about 95% of the time and the 5 wood well about 25% of the time. The length of the two clubs is the same, so the only difference I can see is that the 5 wood head is a little bigger. With the 5 wood, I either top the ball or hit way behind it and dig a crater in the earth. I think the problem may be "between the ears" as I have always struggled with fairway woods, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Based on previous comments on this message board from Mr. Lake, which ring true from my own experience, you must be putting a different swing on your 5 wood.

If you hit your 7 wood well, then that same swing will be effective with your 5 wood. Most of us have a tendency to struggle with the lower lofted irons or woods at first due to problems associated with our older sets of club. Remember, your previous set had graduated shaft lengths, and your long irons and woods probably didn't fit you correctly. You may have developed a "sway" in your swing to compensate.

It's a mental thing. Trust the swing described in the playability tips. Again, the same swing you use with your 7 wood will be completely effective with your 5.

Hope this helps,

Michael

Debra,

What Michael posted is 100% correct. You should go to the range taking only your #5 wood and you will cure this problem in short order.

Thanks, David and Michael! I'll be at the range tomorrow afternoon with my 5 wood and headphones. The only problem is my new 1 Iron driver came today and I will have to try it, too. May have to have two range sessions tomorrow.

I had a same problem with my new set that I recieved yesterday.

David/Michael: When you mention "lateral sway" do you have picture that describe/explain this movement. It will help to visualise what exactly you mean by "lateral sway".

Debra,

You will enjoy your driver. It took me three range sessions before I "got" it. You will find it to be both long and precise. There are two pros at the course I most often play. They are both friends, and we play together often. I am even with them in length and accuracy. This was not the case with my former driver (Ping).

Ranjit,

Do a search on YouTube for Tiger Woods' Swing Portrait. Notice how his shoulders move the club on the backswing, and his hips move the club on the downswing. He does not slide forward or backward. He is positioned over the ball throughout the entire motion. Woods' swing is a great example of economy of motion and perfect balance. This is a good thing.

Don't over think. Simply rotate the shoulders on the backswing. Your arms must be absolutely powerless. This is a feeling to cultivate. Let me say this again for effect . . . your arms must be absolutely powerless.

Do not allow the hips to turn on the backswing. In reality they may move a little, but you must cultivate a feeling that they are not moving at all.

On the downswing the hips rotate and your powerless arms make a powerful motion through the ball. The ball will explode off the club face. Your distance is determined by the speed of your hip turn. This is all you need. The pros are using this swing. My favorite swing example is not Tiger's swing. Check out Rory Mcilroy on Youtube. No sway. Perfectly centered. Powerful. Very accurate. I really like how Mcilroy swings. The young players swing this way, because it is simple and effective. Another swing to check out is Anthony Kim.

I know I have not given you a picture of a lateral sway, but this is by intention. Focus on the model. Trust the playability tips. Keep your weight centered. Shoulders back with powerless arms. Rotate your hips with reckless abandon on the downswing as your powerless arms crush through the ball. It's a swing, not a hit.

I hope this helps. David's tools (the clubs) and the swing tips have completely changed my game. I used to be a 12 handicap. Today I played the front nine of my course 2 over par. They were in the process of filling aeration holes on the greens with sand. It was almost impossible to putt. On the back nine a buddy and I played a team scramble against my brother and his friend. We had some good holes and some bad holes, but finished at even par on a very tight back nine. I don't mention this to brag, but only to illustrate that good scores are available. I am no pro, but with the playability tips I have found a reliable swing that works.

Again, hope this helps.

Michael

Ranjit,

I certainly don't want to overburden you with info. More information will not help you. Doing the motion properly and seeing the results will be your only cure. Information overload will only hurt you.

However if you watch this video clip from the first you will get several views of AK's swing, which many tour players envy.

Pay particular attention to 4:17 through 5:28 on the video timer. This is the segment that will provide some light on the no sway shoulders/hips swing.

Had a range session today with my 5 wood and the driver. There was improvement with the 5 wood, but I think it's going to take one or two more sessions with it for it to become as reliable as the 7 wood. The driver is about an inch and a half shorter than my current driver. I hit a few really good, straight shots with it, and look forward to the day when they all look like that. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks for your tips. This will help. I understand what you mean now with lateral sway.

I had a look at both the swings. They both are quite good.
I am quite new to golf just about 10 months only. I yet have to see better swing than Mr. Hogan's.

I have more round arm backswing (single plane swing) rather than two plane swing like tiger wood or new age pros, which is more upright backswing. I am sure this won't matter?

Hit several really nice straight shots with my 5 wood on the course today after a couple more range sessions with it. The driver is coming along also. The wedges will be ordered soon and then my bag will be all 1 Iron clubs except for my putter. I'm getting rid of everything else. Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

Ranjit,

Anthony Kim and Rory Mcilroy are both on the single plane model. But forget about all of that stuff. The swing tips essentially is a single plane swing, but knowing the ins and outs of that won't help you hit the ball. The most effective thing you can do is commit to those swing tips and try your best to forget about everything else. Believe me. It works, but you got to come to practice sessions with a clear and uncomplicated mind. Otherwise you will second guess everything and have horribly unproductive practice sessions.
