Subject: 3 and 4 irons

I hit the 5 thru Lob Wedge and Driver, 5 and 3-wood better than I have ever hit any clubs in my life. I was concerned that I was not developing enough clubhead speed to use the 3 and 4 iron. David Lake advised me to keep working on it and I would like them as much as the rest. Man, was he ever right. Once I stopped swinging them with all my might and just took the same swing that I would use with a 9-iron, everything fell into place. Fifty years of misguided effort is hard to unlearn but I am getting there thanks to these clubs. I used the same practice routine that David suggested for my 3-wood. I selected the iron that I liked to hit the best (which was all the other irons 5-LW) and alternated hitting my 3-iron with let's say the 7-iron. Same swing, same effort (effortless) and in no time I was hitting that 3-iron better than any 3-iron I have ever tried before.
These clubs WILL work as long as I can keep the stuff between my ears under control. Thank you, David.

Walt,

Glad to hear it.

The problem lies in mind/muscle memory confusion. You can try to hit our #3 iron consciously knowing that you must use the same swing with all of the irons (for instance, your #8 iron swing if your W-T-F measurement is in the 35"-35.9" range). However, since you are consciously aware that your are holding a #3 iron you will unconsciously revert to your old ingrained #3 iron swing without even realizing that you are doing so, and will end up with very poor results. You will also unconsciously try to swing harder and over-power the shot. It is important to realize that the unconscious mind is much more powerful and more closely tied to physical movement than the conscious mind. Changing what has been ingrained in the unconscious mind and muscle memory over many years of playing conventional length irons is a challenge and cannot be accomplished by only a few trips to the range and a few rounds of golf. Numerous trips to the range and swing repetition are required to make and ingrain these changes.

The three or four day regimen that is detailed in the Playability Tips that we email with each order produces the quickest avenue to instilling your single swing for all of the clubs. Once this is achieved the lower lofted irons become as easy to hit as the wedges.

I have experienced a similar renaissance with my 3 & 4 irons. I began to hit the 4i well but not the 3i, so I went to a vacate field and dumped out my bag of balls and laid the 3i on the ground. I hit a few balls with the 4i, then hit a few with the 3i, then changed irons several times so that so that I did not know which iron was in my hands. Before long I was hitting balls better and better and looked at the iron I was using and it was the 3i!
